Description
Time for a big ol dump of official Battletech lineart! This "classic" (or "newseen" as the fans call it) set of mechs is intended to refresh the art for some early era mechs.
My goal was to be as faithful as possible to the originals to deliver something recognizable and iconic, yet still come up with something original.
The BattleMaster is the only mech of the set that I didn't design, as it first featured on the cover of Interstellar Operations, Alex Iglesias' handywork. We liked that version enough to stick with it aside from a few edits, rather than me coming up with something else.
The huge bubble cockpit returns!

I gotta question... How does the hand actuator even work if encased like that? Does the PPC swivel out of the way so the hand is out? The Newseen Phoenix Hawk you drew doesn't even have a hand on its main gun arm anymore.

The Phoenix Hawk still has the hand, it's also covered up by the gun. You work them out how you personally like. Quirk them as droppable weapons, make the hand unusable, etc. They don't have swivels designed in though.

This PPC is very interesting. With this design we can see how while still being a handheld weapon it is still still attached to the arm, near the back I believe, so that it can draw on the mechs power plant. It also adds to the potential seriousness of "dropping" the PPC. Unlike the gun carried by the Dougram Bigfoot that was used for the original Battlemaster dropping this PPC is not as simple as just throwing the weapon down. This one probably needs to disengage power connectors and such to release the weapon. This also means it can't just pick up and start using the weapon again, probably, as the connections for the power supply need to be reattached and assuming the process isn't automated will need some techs to plug everything in properly.

Well, the new Shadowhawks are out but yeah, they really need to get T-Bolts and Beamers up for sale.

They've already got three different versions of the Classic Shadowhawk out (standard 2H, 2K, and Royal 2Hb). Are they making another one?

Definitely nice to see the return of a proper handheld PPC... and nice to have much more sensible design than the original.

Yeah Alex did a good job on the PPC housing. "Held" weapons are a little tricky to do if you want to get any more than 90 degrees of bend in an elbow. This one gets just a little bit more.

Better without the bunny ears, and without the square cockpit.....and without 6 Large Lasers slammed into it. Not entirely a fan of the weapon being griped by the hand, means only one free hand for dealing with.....issues within one's personal space. Still, its a beauty!

Seeing CGL invest in great artists like you and Alex to bring some visual freshness to Battletech makes me all warm and fussy inside. I still remember when I saw the Combat Manual: Mercenaries on my game store and went like: 'I can almost swear I follow the guy who did this on DA!", ahah. Can't wait for what's coming in next year!

It's certainly taken them a while to locate interested artists with a modern aesthetic. Sadly even if they do find them, they lack the funding to hold onto us.
Alex Iglesias is all bought up by the videogame side, so no more tabletop art from him, and CGL can't afford to pay me enough to have me handle the bulk of design and cover work.
Redesigning the unseen wasn't something I could pass up though, even if it's cost me a lot over the last few years.

Hopefully with the upcoming products and videogames around the BT universe they'll grab more folks, especially new players. That way they might be able to call you guys in on a regular basis as demand for new content is required.

I remember being so mad that you could not play as this Mech in MW2. It was such a fresh, new thing and it was scary as a kid "Battle master" ..that was gonna jack you up! And you never got to use it.
I love this rendition. the good old classic feel, I never caught what show it was pulled from .

They're very alive and kicking. They're failing at making anything good with Macross, but the company has multiple investments to stay alive with, so they can maintain their deep IP trolling hatred of battletech.

Heretic1311 In reply to Stargazzer811 [2019-05-28 08:10:01 +0000 UTC]
It is optimized for the MWO engine, they generally are more blocky, yes.
But their designs are consistent, like when a certain technology forces designers to certain similar solutions on different machines.
So that DOES makes sense, to some extend.
And while i personally like it, i respect anyone thinking differently.
Life would be boring if we were all the same.

Funny enough Alex designed them both, though even if he wanted to go with the big glass on his first round, it wouldn't fit in the aesthetic of MWO.

BishopSteiner In reply to Shimmering-Sword [2017-11-21 17:28:32 +0000 UTC]
which is funny considering how often he's deviated form the aesthetic himself... like on the Arctic Cheetah. Or even his Griffin.

Shimmering-Sword In reply to BishopSteiner [2017-11-21 18:13:01 +0000 UTC]
Well, I don't think the aesthetic required hardcore tank slit glass, as many do manage. The beemer is just one of a few examples where the abuse of ferroglass lore goes a little too far
