How are there never any sketch lines?
How long did it take you to get this good?
Or were you born with it?
>:C

FRUSTRATED!!!

There were sketch lines But for the purposes of this being a tutorial that people could read without being confused by a bunch of extra lines, I took them out. And no, I practiced every day for the last ten years to learn how to draw.

ah ha. Well, I have 7 more years to practice then I guess. Did you take any lessons or anything? Any extra tips to help me out. For example do art in highschool or take an art class after school?

shingworks In reply to cookiesncream93 [2010-10-12 03:00:51 +0000 UTC]

Nope, just observation and practice I am a biologist and a teacher, art is just a hobby. The best way to learn your hobby is just to get into it, read a lot of comics, look at a lot of art, and pay attention to stuff that is interesting to you personally.

I tend to have trouble WHAT pose to do for my chars
how do you get around to doing it?.. if you have any pointers that could help

i can try and explain better if you dont get what ive just said

shingworks In reply to suki-red [2010-09-27 14:39:31 +0000 UTC]

Like you're not sure what pose looks good? The way I do it sometimes is to act it out... pretend you are in the same situation as one of your characters. If they're being thrown, jump backwards onto your bed or something and try to take note of what you're body is doing. Or, you can google for images that are similar to what you'd like your pose to look like (for things like running, jumping, etc)

That is just a rough sketch I sketch freehand based off my imagination, or if I need to, a reference.

This probably won't get answered, but I might as well ask.

I see this tip repeated over and over: flowy lines, don't draw stiff characters, that kind of thing. I totally agree. The art that works for me is dynamic and fluid. Problem is, I have no idea how to do that myself. My sketches are a complete mess, and I usually rework poses so much that I get sick of the drawing. I've done my share of drawing by reference (even though there's only so much you can do when you're self-taught) but it still doesn't work. Or rather, it only works occasionally when I'm super inspired. Not when I have to get inspired for a commission. What to do?

shingworks In reply to GreenSprite [2010-09-21 01:06:44 +0000 UTC]

If you have messy sketches but you like what you can see in them, then the issue is finding the "line of best fit" (kind of like in algebra). Somewhere in there is the line that works for you, and is the most dynamic. You can refine your lines down to that one line by using layers in photoshop or some other program. I do it by sketching loosely on one layer, then turning down the opacity from that layer and then putting a new layer on top and trying to find the lines I want. Then repeat several times until you find the lineart you want. IRL this is the equivalent of using several pieces of tracing paper to get to the final version, which you'd get onto paper with a lightbox.

Reworking an original sketch doesn't tend to help, since you're erasing the lines you need as reference.

Hope that helps.
