The Alaska Class Battlecruiser succeeded the Excelsior Battleship design as the backbone of the United Federation of Planets Defence Fleet. The first of these vessels was laid down in 2291 at the Mars Orbital Drydock Facility. Two months into construction, work was halted due to unrest in the Federation Council concerning the plans to name the first vessel "Enterprise". Opponents in the Council argued that the name should be synonymous with exploration, and that it should go to a vessel of the Federation Exploration Fleet. For over a year the arguments continued until a majority vote finally ruled in favor of assigning the name. Work was continued and the "Enterprise" launched in 2293.

The Enterprise was assigned to a ten year galaxy exploration mission seven and one half years into her service. Two and one half years into the mission she sent a distress call to Starbase 67, and was subsequently listed as missing and presumed destroyed one month later.

The second vessel class in Starfleet to have Transwarp drive, the Alaska Class Battlecruiser was designed purely as an offensive weapon. Her weapons included eight mega-phaser banks, power directly from the Transwarp engines, six photon torpedo tubes, and fourteen standard phaser banks. One other noteworthy improvement is her advanced sensor array that allows for a one third improvement in scanning radius.

The Alaska Class Battlecruisers currently in service are now being refitted with Ultrawarp drive. All ships currently still in the drydock stages are subsequently being modified to improve weapons capacity through the use of the Ultrawarp drive. The effective design of the Alaska Class Battlecruiser will ensure its place in the Federation fleet for years to come.
