Egg coloring - the natural and easy way (when I can do it, you can do it too! ).

FAQ:
Are they still eatable? - Sure, after 10 min. of cooking they are all colored and ready to eat.

Red Onions usable too? - Yup! I added some red shells too. I don't know for sure but I think if you ONLY use red ones it will color them in a more reddish brown.

How much shells do I need? - Use at least 1 kg onions for 10 eggs. The more you use, the deeper the color.

Do shells and herbs change the eggs flavor?- Nope, when the egg's shell is fine (no cracks) they still taste like every normal cooked egg.

But we use tights not rags! - You sure can use tights too. They are easier to wrap around BUT since they are more elastic you have to wrap them really VERY tight around since the cooking water can create air locks and ruin the patterns.

I'm sorry for any spelling errors or mistakes - I don't really have alot of time at the moment.. am working alot. But I still hope it helps ^-^ !

Happy Easter!!!

*edit* A DD? Omigod! I just nearly fainted ! Thanks so much to ~demoncherry for suggesting and ^shelldevil for featuring it. If I had known I'd have tried to write it in a more proper english. I will totally polish it a little when I have time to do so. THANK YOU!!!!!

Getting read for painting eggs in the weekend. Great idea to use herbs for pattern, congrats on the DD.
You can use beet root if you want to make red eggs.

I love this technique, unlike those powder colors, they don't make inner of egg content colored. I could only recommend this from bottom of my heart.

Anyhow, using fabric from old tights or classical pantyhose/ stockings is a bit better from my experience, you don't need to tie it in middle then.
And one can use coffee, spinach water and anything that leaves stains on egg to get various colors.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Shiranui In reply to MarianneSwartz [2011-04-22 17:26:25 +0000 UTC]

Since I hadn't really time and had to work all week I didnt experiment with different things.. but I sure have to try adding other stuff to the onion's pattern ^-^ .
I think it depends. I tried tights too but I guess I was just too clumsy. I prefer a more "hard" fabric.

Shiranui In reply to Linebine [2011-04-22 17:30:25 +0000 UTC]

Danke!

Linebine In reply to Shiranui [2011-04-22 17:59:47 +0000 UTC]

I do something similar...
first I hard-boil the egg like normal
than i careful crack the shell, rolling it, but dont remove the shell
than into the onion tea influsion to dye
the dye sips into the cracks and dyes the egg itself
before serving remove the shell...
the egg will look like marble

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Shiranui In reply to hawthorne-cat [2011-04-20 15:57:46 +0000 UTC]

I wasn't sure if that's actually possible but I sure will try it out too. Thank you!!!

hawthorne-cat In reply to Shiranui [2011-04-20 16:11:46 +0000 UTC]

yup it works fine... you dont need to leave the egg in the dye long.... as the egg is already hard boiled... so I boil a really strong batch of dye first... you can also use the normal colourful dyes that kids like...
