Egg coloring - the natural and easy way (when I can do it, you can do it too! ).

FAQ:
Are they still eatable? - Sure, after 10 min. of cooking they are all colored and ready to eat.

Red Onions usable too? - Yup! I added some red shells too. I don't know for sure but I think if you ONLY use red ones it will color them in a more reddish brown.

How much shells do I need? - Use at least 1 kg onions for 10 eggs. The more you use, the deeper the color.

Do shells and herbs change the eggs flavor?- Nope, when the egg's shell is fine (no cracks) they still taste like every normal cooked egg.

But we use tights not rags! - You sure can use tights too. They are easier to wrap around BUT since they are more elastic you have to wrap them really VERY tight around since the cooking water can create air locks and ruin the patterns.

I'm sorry for any spelling errors or mistakes - I don't really have alot of time at the moment.. am working alot. But I still hope it helps ^-^ !

Happy Easter!!!

*edit* A DD? Omigod! I just nearly fainted ! Thanks so much to ~demoncherry for suggesting and ^shelldevil for featuring it. If I had known I'd have tried to write it in a more proper english. I will totally polish it a little when I have time to do so. THANK YOU!!!!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cheb1992 In reply to Shiranui [2011-04-20 16:17:07 +0000 UTC]

Naja, frohe Ostern jedenfalls! :]

Shiranui In reply to Cheb1992 [2011-04-22 16:35:34 +0000 UTC]

Weil das Zwiebelschälen ja so aufwändig ist und das schneiden dieser viel mehr Spaß macht, ne?

Dir auch in dem Fall frohes schaffen in der Küche und frohe Ostern! ^-^

District-12-Tribute In reply to Snowys-stock [2011-04-21 05:09:11 +0000 UTC]

It just makes a normal hard boiled egg, just a lot more pretty

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

louvis In reply to Snowys-stock [2011-04-20 16:37:03 +0000 UTC]

Nope. You only put some colours on eggshell - anything that's inside of it won't be even touched. Even if it cracks when boiling, and water gets inside, egg's still edible. It only gets funny colour (tried, and I'm still alive).

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

Shiranui In reply to Snowys-stock [2011-04-20 15:50:39 +0000 UTC]

Um, not really. They are like every normal hard-cooked egg. It's just that the onions color them during the usual cooking.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

krokus00 In reply to Snowys-stock [2011-04-20 12:07:36 +0000 UTC]

Why should they rotten? You only cook them for 10 minutes.
I don't know why eggs should rotten by that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Snowys-stock In reply to krokus00 [2011-04-21 20:41:15 +0000 UTC]

i mean if you keep them to long after cooking!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

krokus00 In reply to Snowys-stock [2011-05-01 15:53:52 +0000 UTC]

They'll rot, yes. But hard boiled eggs usually don't rot for a few days, so it's safe the eat them later, too.

To get different colurs, you may use: orange/lemon peel, caraway (for light yellow colour), turmeric (yellow), spinach (green), blueberry, red cabbage (blue), very strong coffee (brown), cranberries, fresh beetroot and frozen raspberries (light red).

But, to be honest, I've tried to color eggs only with onion peels. Gotta give it a try.

Shiranui In reply to louvis [2011-04-20 10:46:56 +0000 UTC]

Beetroot work great for a reddish color too ^-^ (I sure have to try raspberries next time).
The onion shells are great to not only add color but an abstract pattern too.

louvis In reply to Shiranui [2011-04-20 16:31:02 +0000 UTC]

Eeyup. Eggs look very nice with that pattern.

Ooh I remember now - when I was younger, my grandmother used to draw flowers and animals on eggs with hot wax (beeswax, wax from candles - doesn't matter) before putting them to, as somebody said, "onion tea". That technique requires LOT of patience and skill (wax need to be very hot, and it's pretty easy to... how to said that? burn? scald?). Areas cowered with wax won't be coloured.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shiranui In reply to louvis [2011-04-22 16:34:20 +0000 UTC]

Really? Woun't the wax just melt? Or is there still a trace left so it woun't take on the color? Sounds interesting. I sure need to try that too.
Another way to create "onion" colored eggs is with vinegar and toothpick. At least I read about that somewhere.. still need to try that. Well, it has to wait for next year though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

louvis In reply to Shiranui [2011-04-22 18:30:50 +0000 UTC]

Yes, wax melts when boiling. But the covered area will not be coloured (or they'll get very light colour, I don't know what it depends on, propably on wax quality and thickness of layer). Altough, I would suggest to be very careful with hot wax.

Vinegar and toothpick? Never heard of that method. Gotta try that someday.

I wonder, can you do this with unshelled hard-boiled eggs as well? it seems like it would add more flavor and fun to an otherwise plain treat.
Or would the flavors clash? I have never tried this before and you have so you might know
