Full View / Download pleaseEgg coloring - the natural and easy way (when I can do it, you can do it too!
FAQ:
Are they still eatable? - Sure, after 10 min. of cooking they are all colored and ready to eat.
Red Onions usable too? - Yup! I added some red shells too. I don't know for sure but I think if you ONLY use red ones it will color them in a more reddish brown.
How much shells do I need? - Use at least 1 kg onions for 10 eggs. The more you use, the deeper the color.
Do shells and herbs change the eggs flavor?- Nope, when the egg's shell is fine (no cracks) they still taste like every normal cooked egg.
But we use tights not rags! - You sure can use tights too. They are easier to wrap around BUT since they are more elastic you have to wrap them really VERY tight around since the cooking water can create air locks and ruin the patterns.
I'm sorry for any spelling errors or mistakes - I don't really have alot of time at the moment.. am working alot. But I still hope it helps ^-^ !
Happy Easter!!!
*edit* A DD? Omigod! I just nearly fainted

I haven't tried it. But I think it maybe wouldn't work with unshelled eggs... though I think it's a good idea. Maybe when you cook the onion shells (or not only the shells but a sliced onion) for a little and add the unshelled eggs it will actually change the flavor and add a little color.

really cool! but does it still turn out like this if the egg is white?

Sure ^^ ! Though I never used this totally white eggs since our hens always produce light brown ones. The color may turn out a little softer.. but it depends how many much of the shells you use. The more shells the mor color ^^ .

Never thought i would see this on dA.
We do this eeevery year for easter, with the only exception, that we use tights instead of fabric (it's much easier to use). And we usually use just one leave of parsley for the pattern.
It's easy, looks badass, and we don't make a big mess with it.
Perfect. ^^

It's a memory of my childhood actually. When I was little we used to color tons of eggs like this for easter. After years now I thought I'd try it again.
I used tights too but I somehow wasn't happy with the result. I know they are better to handle... but when I used the tights and the shells for color AND pattern it just didn't work for me.
It's a great way to color eggs, totally .

Actually, we only put the pattern stuff (herbs) into the tights.
You don't have to put the onion shells into it as well, the coloring will be the same, even if you simply put the shells into the water.

Hm, it makes a difference for me. I use tights when I want simple and clear patterns (like a little leaf or a flower). It shows the form of the leaf/flower, but the rest of the egg turns a simple brown. With the shells directly on the egg the egg turns out all patternish, though the form of the herb is not perfectly clear, it just adds a little more specific pattern.

hrhr nice

Ohhh, this is awesome! I'm definitely going to do this for my mom. These'll make great Easter gifts for her. What fabric is that you were using? Is it cheese cloth?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Shiranui In reply to Raseleanne [2011-04-20 09:04:54 +0000 UTC]
They are great gifts, absolutely!
I just used an old cotton fabric I found in my mom's fabric remnant collection . I think it doesn't really matter what you use. You can actually use old tights too. I prefer a more "hard" fabric though since it's easier to handle in my opinion.
And thank you ^_^ !

Sure! They'r all ready to eat after you cooked them.
I added some red onion shells too. I never used them exclusively though. But I think they'll color them a more reddish brown.

do the onions or herbs change the flavor of the egg at all?
or are these non edible decorations?

Shiranui In reply to chakuu [2011-04-19 20:26:56 +0000 UTC]
No! The shells and herbs just create the pattern on the egg. If the egg shell is fine (no cracks) they will taste like every normal cooked egg.

Danke !
