Thamk you for the tutorial. i find it very useful. one of the hardest parts about getting a scetch ready for colouring in Photoshop is getting the lines to look good.

Hey, this is a great tutorial! But I must give you a small tip:
You say that in Photoshop, it is difficult to line up the other two lineart layers (the copies, I mean) with the first. But a way to get over that is instead of copying and pasting the layer, simply make sure you are on your lineart layer, go to layer>duplicate layer, and when you are done with that, duplicate it again (you can simply duplicate the new duplicated lineart layer). This way, you have two new layers without ever having to line them up: Theyr'e already lined up after being duplicated. Isn't that easy?
I'm not trying to be diffucul. I just thought I'd help, that's all. Again, it really is a great tutorial!

when you make tutorials you should be specific as to where the tools are and such. This is actually quite confusing and somewhat wouldn't make sense to someone that has adobe photoshop but has never used it and wants to learn.

Ah! AH!!! You gave it away! Now I know! 3 layer gaussian blur! w00t... Wait, now that the magic is known, does that mean it's still magic? Ah sure, it's always good.
Love the characters by the way, can't really critique a tut.

Hey, great idea posting how you do your lines! Everyone has a different method, so it's good to have different ones to try out. I actually have tried a few. Since I'm not that great at drawing anyway, it turns out pretty bad, but it's good to try them. I'll definately be trying yours out soon. Hopefully, it will actually look good when I do it. But anyway... Great job on the tut. Can't wait to see more!

this is really good! but one small tip (dunno if this will help), instead of copying and pasting the line art into a new layer, usually if you right click on the layer you're trying to duplicate, you can usually choose (duplicate layer), and set the opasity to multiply (if it's not showing thought), saves time on lining everything up?
just a suggestion. I've always wondered how you did your line work! this is fantastic

What happens to those of us who have no opencanvas . . . any tips for doing lines in Adobe?

shirotsuki In reply to Wolf-kin [2006-06-12 20:11:08 +0000 UTC]
hmm.. well, i suggest you set you brush to 'smoothing' or whatever the option's called. i think i know a few people who sketch and color just right into adobe, so it is possible!

regular old pencil tool in open canvas ^ ^. i dont use vectors for anything, just me own hands and a tablet. it just takes some getting used to! i totally suggest saving up for a wacom though, they're worth every penny ; ;
