Description Just a quick tut on how I prepare my linearts for colouring. This same method can also be used to colour the lines if the inking was good enough.

Software: Photoshop CS

EDIT: This method works best for inked linearts that has nice, clear lines. However, it is POSSIBLE to use this method to clean up scanned pencil drawing, but you need to play with the levels a bit more and perhaps do a lot more cleaning up than you do with inked drawings. This tutorial is more about cleaning up the lineart - not inking it. One of the reason I did this tut is also because I might make some basic CGing tut in the near future, so this is the first step to it, I guess.

my one dusnt have the flood fill tool..its adobe CS2 9.0...should it be therer??? plz help!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Serio555 In reply to punk000princess000ed [2006-10-22 23:37:51 +0000 UTC]

Don't panic, the flood fill tool is in EVERY graphic software, even MS paint. It is also called the paint bucket tool (which is what the icon usually is) and in photoshop it is often grouped together with the gradient tool. If you can't find the paint bucket icon try finding it behind the gradient tool. there should be a small arrow on the bottom corner of the icons that you can drag out.

I'm not sure what went wrong.. and you seem to be really good at photoshop.. so... I scanned my picture in, but it won't let me click anything in my channels or layers. It has them all locked. Do you know what's wrong with them?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Serio555 In reply to krispykreme1468 [2006-10-19 03:29:09 +0000 UTC]

Make sure you have the picture mode in RGB and not greyscale, and if you cannot alter the picture at all (brush tool, eraser and everything else locked) then try saving it as a different file first (in Photoshop PSD format rathern than JPEG or BMP).

krispykreme1468 In reply to Serio555 [2006-10-19 23:29:32 +0000 UTC]

My picture is in PSD.. and you were right, it was in greyscale, but the RGB scale thing was locked so that I couldn't get it into RGB mode. Any ideas how to switch it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Serio555 In reply to krispykreme1468 [2006-10-20 03:23:37 +0000 UTC]

Image>Mode>RGB

If all else fails, save it as a JPEG, then reopen the JPEG and save as a PSD. Hope that helps.

This is a WONDERFUL tutorial for those who want to have crisp linearts without the trouble of having to outline everything again in Photoshop. Especially those who don't have tablets. This tutorial is a must-read for people who have trouble with linearts. It's so simple!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Serio555 In reply to khepria [2005-10-31 00:38:00 +0000 UTC]

thanks, but to be honest the crispness depends a lot on the lineart itself and the inking. If the original lineart isn't clean to begin with this method would require a lot of manual cleaning up. This tutorial is about transferring the lineart to a new layer so it's easier to work with more than anything.

khepria In reply to Serio555 [2005-10-31 01:03:36 +0000 UTC]

Well, it's still a fabulous tutorial and a very handy one for people who can ink traditionally but don't have the patience to redo a lineart on the computer.
