If I had a tablet and a decent computer I'd totally use this! I like the more stark lines, but with your pictures always being so amzing with the softer lines...Kudos to you!

Heyo

Ctrl-J in photoshop will duplicate a layer w/out needing to adjust for placement. Hopefully that helps.

Nice tutorial I have an answer for your lining up of your layers. Whenever you need to make a copy of a layer, rather than do a cut and paste, grab that layer and drag it to the Create a New Layer icon in the layers pallete. Voila!! you have a perfect duplicate layer with none of the positioning compromised. Good Luck!

OMG a tutorial from Shirotsuki....... I think I may cry from being so happy!!
*looks into possibly getting open canvas* < I have been looking to get it for some time now but I was a bit afraid of using my tablet more *blows off dusty tablet* I would use it more often but... T_T I'm afraid I have a terribly unsteady hand and have yet to make progress when I practice using the tablet.

XD this tutorial rocks though! I am very much looking forward to it's continuation!

I have a question with the whole concept of inking over the lineart - once the lineart is finished, you said that you merged the two inking layers, and then brought it over to Photoshop. Where'd the original rough lineart go? Wouldn't it get merged along with the inked lines? Or did you take the opacity down to 0% and then saved it like that?

shirotsuki In reply to obake-shojo [2006-06-12 20:36:31 +0000 UTC]

good question ^ ^. it stays right where it's at! theyre all visible, the guassian blurred ones just become one layer so i dont forget which one is which. i'll turn off the blurry ones when i lay down my colors so that the gray doesnt fuss with the quality. ^ ^

kaseyditz In reply to ??? [2006-06-07 00:16:42 +0000 UTC]

on Adobe, if you just right click on the Layer File and select "Duplicate Layer" it'll copy it so that it's directly above the main layer and that saves the Copy/Paste/Realigning time you spend in Step 5

Shurakai-Zero In reply to kaseyditz [2006-06-07 02:47:16 +0000 UTC]

There are two faster ways to do this (aren't there always?): 1. you can drag the layer you want to dupe down to the new layer icon in the bottom of the pallette; 2. hit CTRL-J.

Otherwise, this tutorial is great 👍: 0 ⏩: 0

For Photoshop, instead of selecting everything on the ink layer, copying it, and pasting it, just drag your INK layer in the Layers pallete to the "New Layer" button at the bottom. It will automatically duplicate the layer, preserving blend mode, position, and opactiy. Much easier, if I do say so.

I LOVE YOU. MARRY ME.

...uh, just kidding. ._.;

What I mean is, I'm in love with your art and I'm so glad that you're sharing your secrets with us. <_<;

But I do have one question. When you usually scan a picture into your computer, the backround is always in icky off-white (as it is in your first screen-shot). How do I fix it so that it's sparkling pearly white like it should be? D:

Also, to buy open canvas, it says I have to pay in yen. Does that matter since I'd be using my creditcard?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

shirotsuki In reply to ifeedonjapanesehobos [2006-06-12 20:51:40 +0000 UTC]

lol!!! well, onto your question- the actual page and sketch lines do not remain a part of the CG most of the time. though sometimes for city-ish backgrounds, i'll lighten the sketch layer untill it's very very faded, and play off the faint faint sketch. when it's merged, the gray is pretty much non existant! but in every other instance, and it's most of the time, again, that layer just goes byebye. im still toying with this picture though, this may be one of those ones where pieces of the sketch remains > >;.

oh! and im not sure.. i think it'll do the conversion automatically. just be careful, and dont click anything if you're unsure O O!!

YAY, I'm saving up to buy open canvas!

I'd just pirate it, but meh... you can get so many viruses that way. O_o

Lightening the sketch layer... why didn't I think of that? ^_^;; Anyways, thanks a lot. I can't wait until the next part of your tutorial. It'll be a major breakthrough for me, since I don't have the slightest clue how to color digitally. I barely know how to photoshop! D:

I LUFF YEW.

I mean thank you so much. <.<;
