**sorry, another random update XD this picture was also easy to take. now its been properly watermarked and such. also easier to view, somehow i didnt know it was that huge XD anyway, sorry if this is in ur devwatch again!this is a portrait of this was posted on his stock account a while ago. the picture isn't posted anymore, so sorry, i can't link it.
if ur gonna comment here and all ur gonna say is 'oh hes hot' or somethin like that, dont even bother commenting. i say advanced critique encouraged cuz i want real comments, menaing on the drawing, not just the subject. i didnt just draw him cuz hes uber hot or somethin, the picture looked challenging.
oh, and i didnt include the border agin cuz it wouldnt fit in my scanner, lol. that top part u see is part of the burning i did. i might try and scan on the school's scanner cuz its bigger
hope u like

amazing job from the preview it really resembles a photograph and i wouldn't have it wasn't unless you wrote it was a drawing.. since you wanted a critique i have to say that there is not alot of distinction of where the lip starts (although that mgith of been how the picture was) i feel it needs a slight more shading there.. you did an amazing job oh the shirt and i must commend you on making it truly sem textured one thing though is that the part where he lifts up his arm and the shirt touches his face there is a triangle of nothing (as in no shirt just showing the backkround) that looks extremly out of place in the full view..
again i LOVE THIS PICTURE.. and the only reason the things i commented on were mentioned was becuase you wanted a good critique so i tried my best..

This is very well done overall. Good choice of reference as well, as that kind of pose is a challange to draw due to the foreshortening.
However, I would like to point out something about your technique - nothing that actually has to do with the drawing itself, so you can just discard the if you feel you don't need to know.
The overall pencil strokes and shading look a touch chaotic, which has largely to do with the fact that you don't seem to have modelled the face structure. When you look at a face (or a photo of one) you can see very distinct "lines", for example those starting below the temple that follow the cheekbone all the way around to the nose, or those that start on the inside of the eyes and go down the side of the nose in a slight curve to meet the ones from the cheekbone. You find those lines all over, and they are most pronounced around the eyes, the lips, and tip of the nose. By actually letting these lines guide you when you draw, you will be able to add extra depth to a portrait, as well as refinement. The best way to do that is a very light crosshatch, which then can be smudged easily and in the direction of said curves.
In any case, you are very good at what you are doing, so... just keep it up! =]

thank you im not sure exactly what you mean by chaotic though. if you could point out specific spots in the drawing that you think exemplify this, it would be a lot of help
the technique you were talking about, the fine crosshatching then blending, is exaclty what i do, so im not sure how i would change it to look better. anyway, thanx for your help

With chaotic I meant it looks like the pencil strokes are going in all kinds of different directions, rather than follow the bone structure or natural lines.
Mainly around the eye and cheekbones in this drawing. Especially around the eye it just seems to be value, but no real volume.
But anyway, that's just my view. - This is a very good drawing, and nothing should be said against that. =]

Very very beautiful! Don't expect construtive critique from me, because I'm not very experienced on traditional medias... *sigh*
You know, when I saw the thumbnail I thought it was a photomanip - and so I thought "so poor, it's only a sepia effect on the original pic!"... Well now, when I saw the description and then the full-view... I had no words! Hehehe, you can hit me if you want!
I love how you did so many details - like the little spots on his skin, or the texture of his shirt... And I like the burning idea, too.
Also, his facial expression is very captivanting - you've made a good choice of a model!

Wow! it's very very wonderful O_O;
I love the way you drew his nose...and the eye is like perfectly positioned
and..how did you do the texture on his shirt? o.o;...how do you get his hair so..black? XD usually if I color in marker or paint or something....it doesn't look THAT dark o.o;
I don't have anything I can tell you...that could help you draw better^^ this is just...so great XD

thank you!!! i use woodless pencils to get a nice evenness, then to get it so that it doesnt shine so much (which may be why u cant get it very black) i go back over with fine even strokes with a lead pencil. it sort of cuts up the shine for the lead, or something. dunno quite how to explain it, but you should try it

the hair is especially good. the lips are wonderfully done, but they look a little... i dunno, dry? well, i guess since it's a guy he wouldn't have big juicy lips anyhow. the expression in the eyes is wonderful as well. overall, not really much to say. this picture is just wonderful

You are such a wonderful artist. So much so that I shouldn't even comment on your work. But it pains me to see ruin your georgious art work by burning the edges. The piece can speak for itself without the border! That's how powerful your artwork is.

yes, the work can speak for itself, but no matter what i do to it, it will do so. sometimes, adding little things like that that people wouldnt normally do would add another level at which the work can speak. pencil portraits are overdone, i needed to do something different. far too many people do regular portraits in pencil. im sorry if it pains you, but im going to keep doing it, simply because it means something to me, and thats something every artist should think about when doing their own work

Wow. This is really beautiful work! Is it just your normal pencils? Cause the black sections really look black and I almost get the sense that its charcol. The detail work in this is stunning as always. The fabric of his shirt is done wonderfully! I hate drawing ribbed shirts or sweaters but you did it perfectly (especially the folds and shading and making the angles look natural). His hair and neck are my favorite parts of this drawing. The hair is just so ... detailed! It amazes me! I have no patience for hair but its obvious through this piece that you really take your time and work through it! The neck...well... firstly because I love necks and collar bones... but because you do such an amazing job with shading just enough to hint at muscle or bone... I tend to get carried away in this area. You draw what you see and I really admire that. Great work on this piece! I love that you have such and interesting range of subjects. it keeps things fun!

Wow. There's nothing else I can say that everyone else hasn't already said. It really does look like a photograph. I had to sit and stare at it for awhile. The facil axpression is incredible... I know firsthand that getting someone's expression/emotion is the most important thing you can do, and probably the ahrdest as well. But you definitely nailed it. I am once again thoroughly impressed with your work.
And, just because you said not to (and I love picking on people) he is rather attractive.
But that being said, a lot of that has to do with the quality of the artwork. really, would you look at a shitty drawing of someone and say, "Wow, he's really hot!"? Probably not. So that really is a testament to your talent.
Anyway. Another great piece of work.

Wow o.o
Alright advance crit or comment:
As for comment I think the detail is amazing. This picture shows all of the subject, not just obvious contores and shading, but imperfections as well, from the freckles on his neck to the cracks on his lips. It obviously had ALOT of effort put into it.
As for crit... well lets see... the only thing I see that isn't that detailed is the hair, but instead deducting from the picture I belive it adds to the effect sending the eye darting around the page in absorbtion. It (the effect) kinda reminds me of a painting I saw in elementry school called white horse, a dark picture except for a white horse off to the side. Instead of drawing your eye to it, the horse somehow made your eyes venture and take in the entirty of the painting.
...uh, I usually don't comment this much, I hope it was advanced enough for you ^^

i am very impressed with your skill at rendering texture... but please please please don't do the burnt edges. If there is one that I have learned from my professors is that the burnt edge thing is all to cliche and really takes away from beautiful art unless the subject has to do with fire. Consider investing in some quality paper that has a beautiful torn edge or hand made paper that has a naturally interesting edge from being pressed. Your work is quality and deserves the best!

Shley, that is breath taking. Besides the fact that it's Alex, the drawing itself it shows how much talnet you have with your hands and a pencial and it blows me away. When I full viewed it, the tiny details you put into the drawing showed and made me love the art even more than I had.
I agree with one comment, from whom I forgot, about Alex's eye. It does seem a bit small, but I think the fact that his head is tilted backwards slightly has something to do with that. But I also haven't seen the original photo of him. But the detail that went into the eye though; amazing.
The shading is another perfect part in this image. The shading for Alex's neck is near perfect, it's dark where it needs to be and light where it needs to be. The shading around the chin area, his mouth, and nose makes the image what it is.
It's just beautifully done. And I read Alex's comment how he would think it would have been self-involved. Theres no way in hell it would be, because this is excellent art. Better then excellent, but my brain can't come up with a word. lol.
Outstanding job. Brillant.
