Background:
Following the devastating Yuuzhan Vong War and the subsequent Galactic Alliance-Confederation War, the Defense Force of the Galactic Alliance began to re-examine modernization of its warships and starfighter squadrons. While fielding the latest X-Wings in the form of the T-65XJ6 and XJ7 models, and supplemented by the Series IV E-Wings, the demand for a replacement interceptor grew, especially with the Imperial Remnant undergoing its own TIE modernization program. The older Mark II A-Wing was obsolete, and the Aleph-class, while fast, was regarded as rough to handle and lacked the nimbleness required in a fighter-to-fighter dogfight. And the Eta-5, while a capable interceptor, lacked a hyperdrive and was particularly fragile, as was expected from a design that drew considerable design influence from the TIE series.

The answer was Incom's RZ-1 Mark IV, the Super A-Wing. Consisting of a beefier frame, ultra-fast J-88 "Escape Velocity" sublight engines, two Taim and Bak KX-13 double laser cannons, two Krupx MG7 Plus proton torpedo launchers (each with three munitions), and the latest advanced passive sensor package (coupled with an advanced targeting system), the new A-Wing exceeded the Galactic Alliance Starfighter Corps expectations. Thousands were ordered and began replacing fighters in interceptor squadrons across the Alliance, and would serve for several decades into the post-Yuuzhan Vong War era.

The original A-wing could aim it's outer cannons all the way behind it.
This design seems to sacrifice that feature. But maybe it could trade that for being able to route more power to the weapons instead of through turret mounts.

that particular feature didn't work very well. the servos had a bad habit of jamming in the typical HIGH-G meanuvres a wings usually did.

I can imagine that, especially after hearing a lot of them were hand made.

Same could be said about most rebel Equipment.

Yeah, that's a curious facet of the A-Wing that's almost never utilized or even mentioned outside of source books.  Personally, I question the practicality of such a feature unless you had a dedicated gunner or computer assisted aiming program.  Good luck trying to wrestle with rotating guns when you're throwing an insanely fast fighter around in a pitched space battle.

The Eta-5 is described in the Legacy of the Force novels. Wedge's daughter, Syal, pilots these.

Looks cool, but I preferred the bubble canopy of the original design. Also, wats an ETA-5? I’m assuming it’s an evolved version of the Jedi interceptor from the Clone Wars?

The ETA-5 is an interceptor used by the Galactic Alliance and Luke's New Jedi Order in Legends.  It was a continuation of the ETA-2 line that Anakin and Obi-Wan used in RotS, but it also took inspiration from the A-Wing.  To my knowledge there has never been an official illustration, but the browser-based Star Wars RPG that I play has a fan interpretation:

The Jedi Interceptor is formally called the Eta-2... think of the Eta-5 as the love child of the A-wing and Eta-2

Truly man...I always wished adam kops designs were in Star Wars for real. He has such an instinctive sense of design.....it all feels "right" and perfectly fitting...

Cool stuff!  Interesting how the hull progressed towards a more angular, geometric look.  It also has an astromech for the first time!  How high up the number chart would the R-series have been, I wonder?  R-12?

I'm curious about the decision to swap out concussion missiles for proton torpedoes.  Were they aiming for an interceptor better suited at taking on larger targets?  Or maybe there was a technological breakthrough for torpedo guidance systems that rendered concussion missiles obsolete/redundant?

In the EU novels (up to the CenterPoint Crisis), the R-series droids make it up to the R9, which was equipped with a vocabulator so it could speak in basic. Past that point, I'm not sure. The Legacy era works didn't really dabble in droids too much.

I've interpreted that concussion missiles traded off striking power for greater fire control and accuracy, while proton torpedoes were intended for capital-scale targets. I decided on the latter, since I think these advancements would've made torpedoes more versatile long after the Rebellion years.
