Background:
Following the devastating Yuuzhan Vong War and the subsequent Galactic Alliance-Confederation War, the Defense Force of the Galactic Alliance began to re-examine modernization of its warships and starfighter squadrons. While fielding the latest X-Wings in the form of the T-65XJ6 and XJ7 models, and supplemented by the Series IV E-Wings, the demand for a replacement interceptor grew, especially with the Imperial Remnant undergoing its own TIE modernization program. The older Mark II A-Wing was obsolete, and the Aleph-class, while fast, was regarded as rough to handle and lacked the nimbleness required in a fighter-to-fighter dogfight. And the Eta-5, while a capable interceptor, lacked a hyperdrive and was particularly fragile, as was expected from a design that drew considerable design influence from the TIE series.

The answer was Incom's RZ-1 Mark IV, the Super A-Wing. Consisting of a beefier frame, ultra-fast J-88 "Escape Velocity" sublight engines, two Taim and Bak KX-13 double laser cannons, two Krupx MG7 Plus proton torpedo launchers (each with three munitions), and the latest advanced passive sensor package (coupled with an advanced targeting system), the new A-Wing exceeded the Galactic Alliance Starfighter Corps expectations. Thousands were ordered and began replacing fighters in interceptor squadrons across the Alliance, and would serve for several decades into the post-Yuuzhan Vong War era.

looks like anal sauce being ejected from a decaying Ethiopian man's asshole as the pressure builds in his rotting bowels. I'd rather suck the cock of a homeless man for a gas station sandwich than look at this shitty art for another 2 seconds. I'd rather change a 98 year old man's last colostomy bag as he fades the fuck out to the afterlife, in the process spraying liquid feces into my eyes. I'd rather take that same colostomy bag, drain the solids and freeze the liquid into ice cubes to chill a warm glass of piss

Yeah, and it's a pretty decent purple spaceship too! I hate to say it, but I think Anal Shitter might have gone too far this time... Never would have thought he would snap like that. He seemed like such a nice guy most of the time, but I guess we all have a dark side.

Ah, good, the New Republic finally improved upon the A-Wing's design and gave it better hull plating!

A much better design than the stupid teeny weeny A-Wings we got in TLJ. Well done dude!

My only question was didn't the Imperial Remnant merge with the New Republic to form the Galactic Alliance?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shoguneagle In reply to TigersLillyx [2019-01-21 03:36:30 +0000 UTC]

No. The Remnant was part of coalition with the GA against the Yuuzhan Vong, then created a kind of partnership of sorts after the fallout of the Confederation-Galactic Alliance War. Around 132 ABY, the Empire defeated the Galactic Alliance, as Emperor Roan Fel partnered with the One Sith with Darth Krayt.

All of them? Really? In the movies we only see a few dozen TIE's.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JeanLucCaptain In reply to Anzac-A1 [2018-09-10 22:23:08 +0000 UTC]

SHOOT THEM DOWN, ALL OF THEM. also each ISD had 72 of them. So multiply that by the number of ISD in movies.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Anzac-A1 In reply to JeanLucCaptain [2018-09-10 22:31:54 +0000 UTC]

Wrong. ISDs almost NEVER carried a full fighter complement. Most carried either only a squadron or two at most, or often carried none at all. Remember, the Tarkin Doctrine prioritised large capital ships over starfighters.

Besides, how many A-Wings do we actually see getting shot down? Not many. The simple fact is that A-Wings had a better survival rate, due to having shields.

Comparatively speaking. After all Rebels covers one small rebel cell.

Anzac-A1 In reply to JeanLucCaptain [2018-09-17 22:13:11 +0000 UTC]

I'm talking about all sources as well. A-Wings simply have a better chance of survival, based on their design. Between the two, I'd much rather trust my life to an A-Wing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JeanLucCaptain In reply to Anzac-A1 [2018-09-19 01:41:01 +0000 UTC]

TRUE even the tie defender didn't have built in life support for the cockpit.

Anzac-A1 In reply to JeanLucCaptain [2018-09-19 02:27:35 +0000 UTC]

And A-Wings present an incredibly difficult target; fast, highly agile, with a small target profile from almost every angle.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Anzac-A1 In reply to JeanLucCaptain [2018-09-25 21:34:47 +0000 UTC]

Actually, no. Interceptors are characterised mainly by speed. Dogfighting is actually something interceptors are meant to NEVER do.

JeanLucCaptain In reply to Anzac-A1 [2018-10-01 21:53:19 +0000 UTC]

Except in SW.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Anzac-A1 In reply to JeanLucCaptain [2018-10-02 02:33:04 +0000 UTC]

Um, wrong. It is literally named as the RZ-1 A-Wing interceptor. Its combat roles are listed as "starfighter combat" and "interceptor". The A-Wings used by the Rebels favoured speed above all else, just like a typical interceptor.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JeanLucCaptain In reply to Anzac-A1 [2018-10-02 15:34:13 +0000 UTC]

true. but star wars plays lose and fast with ship types. like the Star Destroyer is more of a ship configuration not a ship role.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Anzac-A1 In reply to JeanLucCaptain [2018-10-02 21:38:49 +0000 UTC]

It is explained that the term "destroyer" is assigned to those vessels smaller than cruisers and battleships, but larger than corvettes etc, which is exactly how it works in real life. For example, the Lukrehulk-class were described as battleships, which works, since they are almost twice the size of an ISD. Whenever a smaller ships is called a destroyer, it is typically used to indicate that it has the firepower of one.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JeanLucCaptain In reply to Anzac-A1 [2018-10-04 21:48:59 +0000 UTC]

Lucrehulks were more like fleet-carriers in terms of role. they carried a huge number of fighters, bombers and assorted landing ships while serving as Command ships. A destroyer is usually a larger escort ship that attacks either in packs using torpedoes/missiles or runs escort for larger ships like carriers.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Anzac-A1 In reply to JeanLucCaptain [2018-10-04 22:09:05 +0000 UTC]

The Lucrehulks WERE used as battleships, not surprising, given how they had over 500 turbolasers. The SW definition for a battleship includes the carriage of starfighters. They differ from carries by having heavy armament as well. Also, you're ignoring the fact that SW is in a different universe, hence they don't have to stick to real-world definitions. Also, given how these are space warships, it makes sense that the ship types are applied to ships that, to us, seems far too large.

Here's what I've been able to work out, in terms of ship type and typical size/s:

Dreadnought/Dreadnaught = 5,000 - 19,000 metres.
Battlecruisers = 2,000 - 8,000 metres.
Battleships = 2,000 - 3,000 metres.
Cruisers = 350 - 1,400 metres.
Destroyers = 1,600 metres.
Corvettes = 150 metres.

It is worth noting that ships that do not fall within the size bracket for a particular type can still be included due to possessing similar/comparable firepower etc.

JeanLucCaptain In reply to Anzac-A1 [2018-10-05 19:24:31 +0000 UTC]

I know that SW plays very lose with ship classes. Seeing as how the lucrehulk is a VERY HEAVILY modified super frighten.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Anzac-A1 In reply to JeanLucCaptain [2018-10-05 21:03:53 +0000 UTC]

It was a refit, not a simple modification. Also, some Lucrehulks were built as battleships, not all were re-purposed freighters.

But still, the main difference between ship classes is size and firepower, and SW follows this almost perfectly.
