Martial Artists as a whole are just badass. But ninjas come first in my book. Because they would already have the battle won and you wouldn't know it. Then samurai, they are deadly and effective. Then monks and a whole bunch of asian fighters. They all just look like they are performing an intricate dance as they are killing you.
In a battle on the seas only ninja and samurai really would stand against pirates, unless they get in close range. Mostly because of environmental and weapon advantage and the ship movement being new to them. Some would probably be seasick from fightng on the seas.
But on land they would be wiped out, especially in areas with a lot of manuverability.

Ninjas kill whole freakin' armies when they DO have the tec (very rare)
Ninjas can run on water and run up walls and all kinds of matrix stuff Pirates just go "..........yar,i hate my life" when they see it
