Description
Here is part 1! It's always fun to look at what you're not supposed to do and make some fun with it.And like the bottom of the picture says, I went looking around for different fail wing types. Some of these are a lot more common than others.
The one I hate the most: THE NOT-A-WING WING. I never understand why people draw that on bats or anything with "wings". THAT'S SOMETHING FOR FLYING SQUIRRELS OR OTHER THINGS WITH STRETCHED OUT SKIN/FUR.
BUT PLEASE. STOP PUTTING THEM ON BATS. ;-; THOSE AREN'T WINGS.
I get more pissed when I see them on costumes.
SEEE?! [link]
STOP IT STOP IT STOP IT. >8C
THEY. ARE NOT. WINGS.
(this wing tutorial will cover most types of membraned wings. It will not just focus on bat wings)

Did I somehow fail to add this to my Favorites? A perfect negative tutorial, and humor always helps!

I'm so guilty of at least two of these, it's hilarious.
The not-a-wing is still on my character, but he can't even fly and I like using him as a wild-e-coyote type for failing to try and fly ;;
This makes me feel ashamed orz

These are really useful guides!
If you have a few tutorials, I can help you make a cost efficient published work that you can then sell.

Thank. You. I can't tell you how much it would tick me off as a little kid to see these puny excuses for wings.

What is wrong with the stiff-no-fly wing? I'm trying some new characters, one is a bat and that's more or less the way my wings turn out.

There is no muscle at all shown and the fingers don't have joints to bend, which is why it's called the "stiff-no-fly" wing.
If you're doing a bat, please try to go by how a bat wing actually looks. @_@ Study real bats!
I can't paste anything because dA hates Safari, but go into google and put in "bat wings" for reference.

I took a closer look and I see what mean about no joints, muscle. I do my best to have muscle and joints (even though it looks a bit weird since I'm not used to bats). Google has been very helpful and so have you. Thank you

Yeeeep.
I suck at drawing wings. x .x But you know? There's barely any good reference material out there for dragon-like wings. e .o People draw them all too small.
Until then, I have to go on intuition, which isn't much. x .x
But thanks for this, Shorty. I can't wait to see the rest. Maybe I can get some help on mine. x .x Sucks for me because the guy... he's a main character. *facepalm*

Then hopefully the next parts will help! :3
and this is why I am drawin that kind of tut~ Hardly any others... and fewer GOOD ones. (some really suck, holy shit...)

Yaaaaay. D8 Nggggh.
Yesss. x .x
There're some for dragon-wings-on-dragons, but none for dragon-humanoids. Or wings other than feathered on any sort of humanoid form. e .o That's where I need it. *facepalms*
Because a 8-foot-tall humanoid dragon boy with scales ain't gonna have dinky little wings, y'know?
Can't wait to see, Shorty!

FINALLY, I'm glad you've come to realize and put this deviation out there for people to see! I hate all these examples of wings as well, NONE show a true wing structure!
I'll admit I accidently made a few of my wings look like the stiff-no-fly-wing earlier on in my artworks when I was first starting out

I think the "stiff-no-fly" is the closest of this batch to be a "good" wing. So, a lot better than the rest!
THIS MUST BE SHOWN ALL OVER, as well as the correct steps, next. xD

Eh, some of these look good on things that are meant to look unrealistic. Some of them remind me of how I drew wings in grade school.

I used to draw wings like this, too. They were very incorrect. It's fine if they are just for looks, and they DON'T fly, but once they somehow fly... I face-palm.

The magic of a cartoon. I never cared too much but it depends where and when the style is used. If it's a small character, I think it would glide more than fly...or ride on the wind. IDK, I'm never anatomically correct.
I see your point though.

Depends on the weight of the character, really, and how big the wing are.

some look good if you draw them good ^-^ doesn't really matter if it is realistic or not, you can have a pretty awesome style with weird wings ^^

shortybat In reply to Evaldrynn [2013-01-29 20:22:08 +0000 UTC]
If they are just for looks, it is fine. But if they somehow get it to fly, it doesn't work. >_>

I will still glare at fail wings whenever I see them. xD Not so much at beginning artists, but at wonderful artists. Some amazing artists have wings that are SO THICK and bulky... it makes no sense. ._.'
