Here be a finished tutorial! For a long time I wanted to do a tutorial on bats... and little by little I've been getting more motivation to do so every time I saw a incorrect bat. IT WAS DRIVING ME CRAZY.SO, if you're wanting to have a bat character (WHO IS COMPLETELY A BAT. NO HYBRIDS AND WHATNOT) then please draw the bat correctly. Look at references. Don't just guess. AND DON'T DRAW CANID PARTS ON A BAT. GRAAAAAAAHHHHH.
I also think I'ma keep the bat character I made up at the bottom. :'D I LOVE Lesser False Vampire Bats. They are so cute. <3

This is great! I've been meaning to make a little child anthro bat but i had no idea how to draw bats or how she should look like if i was to draw her. I should start looking up some species and see what fits, then i'll make sure (Since she'll be 100% bat) to draw her as properly as my art style will let me

Wow, I didn't realise just how rampant the "canine bat" thing was until I saw this and then looked some up. Weird. It would never even occur to me to give a bat canine features... because, like... it's a bat, isn't it?!

many people don't look at real bats. They just look at what others have drawn for bats.

That's dumb. If I'm going to draw something I've never drawn before, my first instinct is to go and, y'know, look at the thing I'm supposed to be drawing! Not doing that seems like going against common sense.

The detail's very helpful. I'm making a fox bat anthro hybrid as a fursona, so the canine traits will be in it too, but I'll be able to add the bat traits properly, so thank you. I'll let you see it when I'm done to see what you think (it'll take a while though)

Dog nose. Paws. Fluffy tail. Bats don't have that.

Thank you for making this, it will be very helpful when I finally attempt my flying fox anthro. The problem I'm running into right now though is...how on earth am I going to put clothes on her when her wings are kind of in the way of allowing that? Do you have any suggestions?Β

If I were you, I'd use a shawl or a long scarf. You can also try a long jersey since the sleeves are very open on those. You may be able to fit the wings through the jersey if you just use a big jersey.

You'd only be able to put things around the neck or you have to be super creative... or else you'll have to be unrealistic with the wings or just not realistic at all by making it seem like the clothes go through the membrane (which I hate when people do that, Looks so bad)

I'm new to drawing in general, and very new to anthros. Β I was planning on my first anthro character being a bat, and planned to draw my bat with paws and a canid nose. Β Now I'm thinking it might be a bat/cat because I really like how both animals look. Β This is so helpful for the bat aspect and steered my in the correct direction so thank you so much! YES! Someone who gets this right. This would be extremely helpful. I wanted to make an Anthro bat OC, and I know about Bat anatomy, but I didn't know how to start on actually drawing them. Now I'm trying to think of clothing (t-shirts can't exactly work if you know what I mean). I was maybe thinking of a Poncho-like thing. My favorite bats a Silver-haired bats (You can thank the awesome Silverwing series for that).

This will beΒ extremely handy. I've been workin on an anthro bat character, and she's....not exactly realistic when compared to this tutorial, then again I didn't design her based on any real bat. Based on this example I'd give her a realismΒ rating of....3. I didn't give her dog feet I can tell you that,Β although I didn't know what kind of feet to give her because I couldn't find any good refs for bat feet, so they kinda look like clawed monkey feet...Β Her face was entirely stylized and kind of canid, but not enough to say she looks like a dog. I did give her a more humanesque body though, the only real thing tying her into being a bat is her armwings.
