Description Did this about a year ago.
I think, I will render this one again. I dont like the background.
But I think I did a good job on the pad. Modelling it was easier, than I thought. Thanks to N-Gon and nurbs.

Control Pad from a european SEGA Mega Drive (Genesis).
Originally, this one has a wire. But creating a wire is very boring an annoying. But as I said before, I will create another one of this.
As I don´t have a premium account, I can´t open a poll.
But what do you think?
Should I model the Console, too?

wow!
that does look incredible! took me some time to beliave it was a 3D model instead of a real photo O.o

the only difference i can see, besides the lack of the wire, is the lack of the red color in the A, B and C buttons.

but it's great, i'm gonna fav! =]

There is no red color on the buttons. This is a sega mega drive controller, not the US "Genesis" controller. But yes. Wire is missing

btw, i have a Mega Drive (i'm brazilian), and my controller have the red color on the buttons and on the arrows of the D-Pad

strange. my german mega drive controller has white letters. I know the red version from the controller seup menu of some import games. But I´ve never seen one in real.

hmm..
that's funny, hehe.
maybe there are a few differences because of the region... (the art of the boxes were also different)

S.W.E.E.T.

From the thumbnail I actually thought it was a photo xD.

The rubber material is great! Although the wood looks 'cheap', just like you said.

I'm looking forward to seeing more stuff from you!

as if it's brand new....
you should make the 3D console too, maybe Sega should built it again and without a wires this time

Oh yes, dude!
Even if PS3 and Xbox360 or latest PCs have so stunning graffix and seriously cool games.
But back in the days, when I was a child, used to play sonic and all the other games, it was an all different feeling.
It´s like the magic is gone,somehow..

mayec In reply to sicklizard [2010-02-07 22:11:59 +0000 UTC]

I agree. I had that same feeling. And the Sega Megadrive/Genesis was quite a special thing for me. I remember how excited I was to put my hands on games like Sonic, Altered Beast, Golden Axe 2, Quackshot, Immortal... I have never felt that same "magic" again, ever.

I didn't really notice the background til I read your comments, but I see what you mean. Everything else looks great, though. The textures on the controllers looks just right. Photorealistic.

One day I will model the genesis, too. But it´s more work than the controller.
We´ll see...

Never tried it, though I used to use VRay for C4D but stopped once the new AR3 came out and started learning to tweak it here and there

Yes AR3 was really a step forward. I love it´s speed. Even if you use GI, it´s still pretty fast

You mean the wood? Found that with google image search

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

eRiQ In reply to sicklizard [2009-09-30 02:54:07 +0000 UTC]

no -- not the wood - lol - (that's actually the most fake looking!)
I meant the texture of the actual controller!!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sicklizard In reply to eRiQ [2009-09-30 02:59:19 +0000 UTC]

I was wondering. The cheap wood is the reason, why I want to do render this again.
Then you mean the material. The texture is just white text on black ground.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

eRiQ In reply to sicklizard [2009-09-30 04:02:37 +0000 UTC]

the actual black "plastic" feel of the controller was what I meant -

sicklizard In reply to eRiQ [2009-09-30 23:49:08 +0000 UTC]

You should try out maxwell for rendering. It´s not very difficult to use.
It needs a real fast system but the results are the best.

Will Maxwell render SketchUp? - That's the only 3d program I use at the moment

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sicklizard In reply to eRiQ [2009-10-01 03:57:28 +0000 UTC]

Yes.

As far as I know, the plugin for Sketchup must be in the bundle.
The latest version is 2.0 but I wasn´t able to find it anywhere.
I use version 1.7 There´s nothing interesting about the new features in 2.0 compared to 1.7.

Torrent Download for 32-bit (works with 64 bit, too) [link]

I hope, it works.

Hint: Learning Maxwell is a step by step thing.
At first, you have to set the scene in sketchup. That means setting UVWs. You must use objects for light sources.

Then you can export the scene. Don´t forget to save the scene in sketchup, too. You can close Sketchup now.

Step two is opening the scene in Maxwell Studio. Here you create the materials and assign them to the objects, including light objects, that are in fact polygon objects with a glowing material (Emitter).
Setting the camera (Exposure, Focus, DoF, resolution) and render setting. Some of these settings get adapted from sketchup, but you have to go through them in maxwell again, nevertheless. So doing it once saves time.
You can render a preview directly in the viewport.
You can only use HDR images for emitting light with textures. There are some in the Maxwell program folder. Very useful for backgrounds.
Save the scene with a new name. Close Maxwell Studio.

Step three is rendering the scene with Maxwell Render. It´s standalone. You can stop the render at any time and resume it later.
You can also adjust the exposure, in case the scene is too dark or too bright, so don´t panic. You can do that while rendering.

This is a lot of info, but very necessary for achieving good results. If you have any questions, just ask.

I love the black plastic texture. Can you just quickly explain how you made it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sicklizard In reply to 3Dapple [2009-09-29 17:31:24 +0000 UTC]

It´s a maxwell material. One colorlayer with texture and a second layer with blurry reflection.
