Description
I started a poll on which Universal Monster should be drawn and the Creature from the Black Lagoon has been winning so far. I decided to go ahead and draw him anyhow and I'll take his name off the poll, but keep the votes coming. This piece didn't turn out quite as cool as I hoped. The lighting in the cave was a little tricky to not get too contrasty or too muddy. The girl in white behind him is Julia Adams from the first movie.

Gotta love the Gillman.
I think the lighting in the cave is awesome. The contrast, the mud, it captures the eerie, smudgy camerawork used in the underwater sequences of the film, and makes him look really, really cool.

Thanks a bunch! It was just an experiment but gave me some ideas how to do the technique better next time.

Love the gill-man! I hope the rumors are true that there's a remake in the works! The girls would look pretty wild if the gill-man had some sort of power to transform them into gill-girls with webbed hands and feet, too!

Yea, that rumor has been floating around for a long time. At one point John Carpenter was set to Direct and then Stephen Somers who did the Mummy and VanHelsing. The last rumor I heard had the guy who did the Batmanead End short film attached to it.

Really like how this one turned out & the reflected lighting on the ceiling is a nice detail to the piece. Always wondered with the Creature (and other leading lady abducting movie monsters) just what it was going to do with the girl once it got back home.

Yah, I know he's just a fishman, but who cares.
This is great.

that's what monsters should look like. (i tried to draw the chinese antichrist, but it turned out as a lovely toy compared to your monster...)
the reflections of the water on the wall is very well done. i'm really looking forward to seeing more of your art.

Fantastic (I guess the Forrest J. Ackerman-style pun would be "fintastic"). I've always had a soft spot for Creech...and this is a great treatment of him.

I like it, especially the lighting. Something about your creature's face reminds me of one of those fish at the bottom of the ocean with it's own light that hangs out in front of it's face, you know for attracting other fish to eat.

I like the new skinny touch you gave the monster.
About the light: I think it's just right so, you even thought of the water reflections on the cave's ceiling. That's really precise working.

Yea, I thought about that when I was drawing him. I started out that way but it felt more natural for me to make him skinny, kind of fish-salamander-like and less guy-in-a-suit-like. I kind of liked both versions but I opted to color this one, maybe I'll post the sketch for the other.

That'd be cool, can't wait to see and the sketchyness and skinnyness makes him seem darker. And you never answered is your icon inspired by the KONG studios monkey logo (Gorillaz was one of their few projects)

No, I just now realized they were similar.
I drew this zombie monkey head with a fez because it matched the identity for all my art "sideshow Monkey". It is actually supposed to be a zombie version of the 'real" sideshow monkies that danced around to an organ grinder for a peanut as payment while the organ grinder sits back and does nothing collecting all the money. Kind of fitting for the story of my art career.
