“Careful, ellon, pride as ever comes before a fall.”

The head is bowed once more, the fierce eyes hidden from sight, but the voice rings out clear, “I beg pardon, my king, I do no more than speak the truth.”

“Hmmn… I do but wonder how long it will remain the truth.”

“My king?”

He motions for her to stand up. “Tell me, your opponents - they have all been soldiers of the Elvenguard, have they not?”

“Yes, my king. We train only among ourselves; there are no others against which we could test our skills.”

“No others? Then I must ask your forgiveness, soldier, for not providing you with a suitable challenge, and allowing you to remain in a situation where your skills stagnate, unchallenged.”

And now those eyes cloud over as she frowns, but she’s wise enough to hold her tongue - though only for a moment, before she chokes out the words she cannot check: “Then, my king, you have it.”

And he smiles. His heavy silvery cloak whispers softly as he lets it fall to the floor. His crown, by contrast, he removes carefully, and hands it wordlessly to his son, all this whilst Tauriel shifts her weight uneasily from foot to foot.

She is entirely uncertain as to what his intention is, but her dim suspicions are confirmed when Noldir, the king’s steward, hands Thranduil his sword. He flourishes it experimentally a few times, all the while ignoring the nervous ellon standing to his side, and the circle of curious Guardselves around them.

It seems to Tauriel almost an agonised eternity before he turns to her and speaks, and when he does, there is no mistaking the smirk on his lips, “I thank you for your forgiveness; now allow me to remedy my mistake. Will you accept my challenge?

My little headcanon: the day Thranduil meets Tauriel for the first time is the same day she is promoted to captain; and also the same day they fight an epic duel.

Thranduil asks Legolas for suggestions. Legolas suggests Tauriel. Thranduil is all, “Yeah, sure, your bff, that *absolutely* sounds like a good, unbiased decision…” Legolas is annoyed by this tells him they’re training atm, so why not go there and see for himself. He does.

Tauriel fights well, and is proud of her undefeated status; Thranduil can’t resist challenging her. He wins, of course, but only by a hair’s breadth, so he announces on the spot that she’s the new captain.
