Aubrey drives out to the countryside ready to get into her first case. Before she heads down the long driveway toward the manor, she pulls over the collect her thoughts and review her notes on the questions that she wants to ask Mr. Manfred.

Ryker Manfred was a mysterious person. The police were puzzled by Louise Sperling’s sudden decision to move in with Mr. Manfred after a tax assessment visit (Story - Home Inspection ). But by her own words, she admitted that she was happy, so there was nothing that the police could do. So, this was the second time Mr. Manfred has been called into question as the reporter Iole Marla was supposed to question Ryker and Louise for a story, but never returned. Aubrey knew that she needed to be ready for anything. She pulls down the driveway, gets to the large manor, and knocks on the front door. After a few knocks, Ryker begrudgingly opens the door and invites Aubrey in. Aubrey enters and closes the door behind her.

“What can I do for you, Miss…”

“Detective. Detective Aubrey Copeland. I’d like to ask you a few questions about the disappearance of Iole Marla and about your housemate Louise Sperling.”

“I don’t know who Iole Marla is, but I’ve been through this with the police in great detail about Louise. She is happy here. We were meant to be together. We are engaged to be married! It was love at first sight.”

“Do you mind if I talk to Louise?”

“Louise isn’t here at the moment. I’m afraid that she’s gone into town to get groceries.”

“That’s odd.” Aubrey places her hand instinctively over her gun holster. “There is only one vehicle registered between you and Louise, and it appears to be in the garage. Do you mind if I have a look around?”

“She took an Uber just in case I needed the car.”

Aubrey is not satisfied with that answer. Her hand remains over her gun.

“So how about that look around.”

“Umm, okay, but…” Ryker looks down at Aubrey’s feet. “You need to take off your shoes. It’s a house rule.”

“I don’t think so. You are wearing shoes. Let’s start that tour, okay.”

Ryker appears visibly upset by this but relents and leads Aubrey deeper into the home.
