Description Liquid Latex 101: LL Basics- You are here.
Liquid Latex 102: Peeled skin and 3D effects- [link]
Liquid Latex 103: Character Building- [link]
Liquid Latex 104: Easy Prosthetics- [link]

EDIT:I forgot to mention a few important things up there:
1. Some people are allergic to latex. Make sure you are not allergic before using liquid latex.
2. LL is very hard to get out of clothes as well as hair. Be very careful while applying it.

Oh, about the supplies. You can get LL and the other stuff at most Halloween or costume/ stage supply shops, or online. Places like Party City would have them too, but the LL might be labeled "flesh latex" or something similar. The bottle won't be as big as mine either.

Great tutorial, thank you so much! Glad I've discovered it in time for Halloween! And I'm probably being a bit dim here (and/or have brought the wrong stuff! ) but is there a way to get the latex off your skin painlessly? It feels like I'm waxing my arms haha! Or a base layer you can put down underneath the latex to make it easier? I'm so sorry for coming to you with my silly questions, but it seems like you're the dA expert in the field

lol I'm just a hobbyist. There are truly professional artists on DA, but I have found they don't always have the time to answer questions. So go ahead and ask. I don't mind.

As for painless removal... No, sorry. It just rips off. :\ It's much like removing a giant Band-Aide. The more hair you have under the latex, the worse it is, so either shave the area or just don't put latex there. I always put lotion on my face before applying latex, but it really doesn't make removal better. The best thing I've found for removing a giant chunk from my face is just to apply a slow and steady pull from the edges. Dipping a Q-tip in some oil and rubbing the skin-latex interface with it as you remove may help, especially if there is hair.

You are an absolute angel. Thanks!

I tried the lotion (well, all I could find at the time was body butter) and that actually really helped- as did the shaving tip, cannot believe I didn't even consider that. Not at my best mental capability clearly! :') Thank you so much for your help, and I'll have to try the oil tip too (the first time i tried to peel the latex off my arm, I managed to give myself a piebald waxing! :S Haha not my best look!)

Thanks again!

I have a quick questions-- what is the typical shelf life of liquid latex? I bought a bottle about 2 years ago (it's the size shown here), I've used it sparingly, stored it in idea condition. I plan to use it Halloween, mostly on my face: can I use the same latex or should I go buy a new one?

SilverDrgnbane In reply to Dragonflysparkle [2012-10-12 04:33:59 +0000 UTC]

The bottle you see here lasted four years, the last of it used just last month, at which point the remaining product was very thick and sludgy. I think you are fine with a two year-old bottle, I know I used my latex every year for Halloween since iI got it, but watch out for the sludge as it ages. You might want to find ways to use it up before that happens. Make some prosthetics, a bald cap, or gore up a bunch of friends. I'm only purchasing small bottles from now on unless I know I need more.

Wow great info about Liquid Latex. I got involved with Liquid Latex a few years ago and it is a great product. Unlike regular body makeup it will not run , smudge or rub off which is great if you plan on using it for Halloween and want to wear clothes over it, (it's also waterproof). It takes about 2-3 coats to achive the best results, each coat takes about 5-10 minutes to dry and you can use a hair dryer on medium heat to speed the drying process up. Once the Liquid Latex has dried a finish spray should be applied to it to keep it from sticking to itself and tearing, if you do get a little tear just apply a little more Liquid Latex to the area and it should be good as new. Our Liquid Latex is ammonia free and non toxic, won't keep you from perspiring, will last for hours and clean up is simple just peel it off. I have many different sizes from 4oz to a Gallon we also carry glow in the dark Liquid Latex and Metallic along with Neon and solid colors. So Check us out at [link] we have great prices and offer same day shipping. Thanks and Good Luck.

Thank you so so sooooo much for having these!! They are JUST what I need! I got roped into doing makeup effects from some theatre friends since I sculpt, little did I know how hard it was ...until I saw these tutorials! You are my hero, super appreciated!

A sculptor, eh? I recently found a much easier way to make professional "sculpted" appliances, you know the kind with two or three sets of positive-negative molding? Instead of taking a cast of the person and sculpting on that, just sculpt on a foam head or plastic mask. I tried it tonight and made some exposed teeth with gums in one go.

I'll try to make a walk through of them tomorrow.

Sounds cool! Would love to see it. I am enjoying doing the effects and makeup for the local theatre company so any tricks I can find will help for sure !

AWESOMENESS. You have no idea how this delights me. This is exactly the kind of information I need to create my lovely stitched wounds for this year's costume ^__^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SilverDrgnbane In reply to ZippyTheAvenger [2008-10-06 03:14:23 +0000 UTC]

Ooh, those are fun. ^^ All you do is take the latexed tissue and split it down the middle to make a gash, and peel back the latex for the wound edges. Then you pull out the needle and thread and sew the edges. Don't forget to put makeup in the gashes first. Just be careful not to poke yourself.

Hmm... I usually see Leroux and Kay Eriks as very similar. Are there really differences? I can't remember...

As for ALW, Lindsey from Phantom on a Budget has done a wonderful video tutorial for the ALW and Leroux looks. She also gives a lot more info on the makeup and supplies, mostly stuff I don't really know. [link]

I just know how to make you look crispy, really crispy...
