Description This started out as a reference sheet for me if and when I use any of these guys in a comic. I wanted to have a definitive chart of all the film and TV Phantom actors' heights. It seems to have morphed into a police lineup of sorts instead. Go figure.

Here's a list of everyone's heights, just so this retains some of it's original intent.

The Phantom of the Salle aka ME- 5'1 1/2'' (because half inches count too )
Lon Chaney-5'9''
Claude Rains-5'6 1/2''
Herbert Lom-5'9 1/4''
William Finley-6'4''
Maximillian Schell-5'10''
Robert Englund-5'10''
Charles Dance-6'3''
Julian Sands-5'11''
Gerard Butler-6'2''
Michael Crawford-5'10 1/2'' (Why is MC in this chart when he was never in a film, you ask. I answer with another question: why not?)

These numbers are taken from IMDb, except for Salle. (I hope I know what my own height is...) Shoes and heeled boots *cough*LonandRobert*cough* were not included in the chart. I drew them all as if they were barefoot.

EDIT: This was made well before the Royal Albert Hall performances, so please stop asking why Ramin is not in here. RAH isn't a film anyway, people.

Nobody beats the originals, Lon Chaney's is very close to the novel and has a amazing affect on his ability to preform without the use of anything major production needs. I mean look at the make up that man did! The other being great Claude Rains who also did it very well, despite a different backstory and him being so short. His voice, compelling eyes behind the mask, and acting really stood out. Also might i add a pretty cool unmasking scene as well.

Okay, so I'm not asking why Ramin isn't in there. Just saying that i#d have loved to see how you'd draw him.

And Julian Sands made a surprisingly good, crazed Phantom in an enjoyably weird movie. Somehow, not having his face messed up worked well; he can play crazy without lots of make-up and somehow in the 21st century, it's difficult to shock anyone without being terribly gross. Just look at all the "that's not a disfigurement, that's a bad sunburn" reaction to Gerard Butler.

I like how well you caught all the details, I could recognize every single one I've seen easily. And adding the correct heights is an interesting touch - I wouldn't have thathought that Charles Dance was taller than Julian Sands!

My fav. Phantoms, that I've seen least clips of are from top to bottom are:
1, Gerard Butler, (saw full film, [and the 1st Phantom film I saw, but that doesn't mean much honestly, but amazing music]
2, William Finley, (JUST saw the full film on TV, interesting setup regarding Swan, enjoyed some of the music but the ending was quite touching)
3, Lon Chaney, (never saw the film itself, except clips, but I just love the classics).

Madame-Enfer [2013-04-23 03:03:46 +0000 UTC]

Never seen the Lon Chaney film - BUT I love 1920s films/horror films/Phantom of the Opera and that one is screening at our Monster Movie Month at the art gallery so I'm keen to go along. It looks gorgeous.

Never seen Claude Rains as a Phantom. Only as Invisible Man and in Casablanca and Lawrence of Arabia. That version doesn't look as interesting to me.

I have a soft spot for Hammer horror, and while I wasn't too keen on many aspects of the Herbert Lom version (including some of the sets, the leading lady and the music) I loved the atmosphere and I liked Mr Lom as the Phantom. This is the closest backstory to Phantom of the Paradise.

Phantom of the Paradise is one of my favourite films ever, and though it's by no means at all a purist adaptation, William Finley is "my" Phantom. He may look like an BDSM birdman supervillain but his death scene(s!) are weird and tragic and he always makes me cry. Also, it oddly managed to keep the decadent baroque feel in spite of all the 1970s style, with occasional organ music and all the red velvet involved.

Never scene Schell. I enjoyed the first part of the Englund version - especially the haunted blood-seeping sheet music - but to me it lost its emotion and became a pointless slasher film. Haven't seen Dance (but I hear good things)

Argento's Phantom is an odd bird - I've seen the first half of it. I love Asia Argento and the look of this movie was fantastic. It's a bit off the wall but thenItalian horrors often are and I love them for it.

I used to love the Gerard Butler when I was a teenager but though its been a guilty pleasure I find it affects me less and less overall. The emotion in it seems a little forced. I do like Emmy Rossum though, and visually it's epically beautiful.

Yay! Winslow love! That version doesn't get enough, so kudos.

You must watch the Charles Dance one. It's by far my favorite of the films. It's still on youtube last I heard.

Madame-Enfer In reply to SilverDrgnbane [2013-04-24 03:36:21 +0000 UTC]

Why thank you. Yes, William Finley is an awesome actor in his own unique way. I have much affection for his portrayals.

I believe I shall! Probably nobody will take Winslow's crown overall for me, but I kind of don't quite consider him an "Erik" anyway. I mean he's obviously based on Erik and very similar, but there are key differences. Then again, all of the Eriks seem to differ as much from each other anyway.

I also really love the original book, of course. A gothic masterpiece. One of my strongest memories of it is reading the creepy portions in a whisper in the dark by a nightlight to my ill sister.

Robert Englund and Charles Dance were my favorite Phantoms, even though Gerard Butler was the first one I saw. Like the idea of having them all up in a police line, considering all of them killed and/or maimed at least one person to get Christine in the spotlight XD

I made this well before he became a Phantom, and this is meant to be of film actors only anyway. The RAH performance, while a dvd now, is not technically a film. MC is only there because I felt like it at the time.

I have been seaking opinions on this- I've seen every version except Phantom of the Paridse and Julian Sands. I know Paridise is at least decent, but should I risk the use of my eyes on Julian Sands? I was really worried I wouldn't like Robert Englund because I am certainly not a fan of anything slasher-like, but he turned out to be one of my favorite Phantoms. So do you think there is there any chance I might end up NOT wanting to throw my tv out of the window on Julian Sands? I've seen PhantomReview's hilarious review, but I'm scared. WIG!

Sheesh, I'm as tall as Claude Rains X)

Oh, did you include Finley's mask/helmet/thingie in the measurements? That thing looks like it'd add at least an inch...

If you like a phantom the was raised with rats, no deformed face, long hair, tongues being ripped out by Erik's teeth, Erik scratching Carlotta's breast, 'getting down' with Christine, and Erik being shot and killed at the end, then yes.

I watched it on Netflix, and it's my least favorite version.

For Sands, it depends on how vehemently purist you are. If you are a huge Phantom purist, you may get a little sick. However, if you're more flexible and take it as a movie all on its own, not a Phantom film, it's ok. It's certainly not the greatest horror out there and parts are downright disturbing/disgusting, but I tolerated the strangeness of it.

No, I did not add any height from the helmet. Pretend the top of the helmet in the drawing is the top of his head. lol
