Description A.K.A. "I finally make a drawing showing off traits my characters have had for years."

A drawing of Melee and Sharon during their earlier years, before Melee become an unofficial "squire" and Sharon lost everything she held dear to her. Yeah, I haven't forgotten about their older designs - those are still canon! I've just been wanting to explore their lives as time went on, that's all, but it's nice to sometimes go back and flesh out their youth. There's plenty there that needs to be established too, you know.

For example: Did you know Melee can breathe fire? It's been a trait he's had ever since I made this character over a decade ago (yeah, I've had Melee since high school!), and this ability is explicitly mentioned in all of the references I've made of him, but... he's never actually been shown doing it . In none of the drawings I've made of Melee, nor in any of the drawings I've commissioned of Melee, he has never once been seen breathing fire like a dragon should... until now, that is.

I guess I never drew it or commissioned anyone to show him doing such mainly because... well, he doesn't use it for much. He can't raze a village or even a house with it,and it's hardly an effective weapon in combat because he can only maintain it for a few seconds before the glands used to produce the flame empty out, after which it'll be some time before Melee can use his fire breath again. He pretty much only uses it for mundane, utilitarian purposes such as starting a campfire or lighting something like a candle of (in the case of this picture) a torch. Hardly exciting, I know.

And look! Sharon's there, too! Did you know Sharon's afraid of fire? Indeed, she's absolutely terrified of it, and Melee shooting it out of his mouth and lighting a torch right in front of her is bound to make her recoil in fear. It was something I established in the last reference I made of her waaay back in 2013, but... well, like Melee and his fire-breathing abilities, it was something I said she had but never actually showed until now . So, uh... yay for me finally showing that, even if it did take me five years to do such since establishing the fact.

Early on in their friendship, Melee actually is unaware that his friend is frightened by fire, so him lighting that torch in front of Sharon doesn't, uh... i-it doesn't go over well, but I'll explore that in another drawing. I'm rambled enough as it is.

...

Sort of rushed this one near the end, as I didn't think I was gonna be able to get it done after one shift. The workload's been starting to pick up again, so this may or may not be the last trash drawing I make for some time. It's just how retail works.

This is an idea I've been wanting to put on paper for a fairly long time now. The past few times I tried, it never went anywhere, since I always struggled with getting Melee's mouth right and I just wasn't able to make Sharon look properly scared. It was basically a matter of my skills not being good enough, and I'd always get too discouraged to keep trying and eventually fall back on something safer... or just not draw at all. Of course, with all of these trash drawings I've been doing lately, I've been trying fairly hard to leave my comfort zone and give my characters some proper... um, character. While brainstorming for ideas, I figured this would be a nice one to fall back on - after all, I've been meaning to draw Melee and Sharon interacting more.

Even added a basic background! That wasn't part of the original plan, but it does help to give Melee some additional context for lighting that torch - it's supposed to be dark out, after all, and I feel it gives the sketch some additional depth, as basic as it may be.

Unlike my last drawing of these two being together, this one surprisingly didn't take a bunch of attempts and discarded cardboard scraps to make and everything went surprisingly smoothly during my first attempt. I mean... okay, it's got flaws: Melee's hand looks a little small (or did I make Sharon's hand too big...? Hmm.), Sharon's mouth looks kind of funny, and I feel like I still messed up Melee's muzzle somewhat trying to draw him blowing a stream of fire. But it's otherwise presentable enough, right? I mean, I doubt anyone's expecting the Mona Lisa out of a pen-on-cardboard sketch, especially one that's made in haste during one's day job, but... well, just gotta keep at it, is all.

Melee and Sharon are property of , A.K.A. myself.

...

Part of my "Trash Drawing" series, in which I put pen to cardboard during the slower and quieter moments of my day job, as whipping out a sketchpad while on the job isn't really a thing I can do. Due to the hasty nature of many of these drawings, coupled with the canvas (a cardboard scrap) being a literal piece of garbage, I have taken to calling these pen sketches "Trash Drawings," though that name may change in the future, as the sketches become more colorful and elaborate.

Its always a good idea to look back on a characters past. It helps to build different traits for them. After all, what is a person but a cumulation of past experiences?

I'm assuming there is little effort Melee needs to put out to actually produce the fire. He seems to be doing it with ease in this picture. Is there any energy he needs to put forth to spark it or force the supply of fuel out of his mouth?

I always figured he had to use at least a little force to get the fire out. I like to imagine that it'd be a lot like trying to burp minus the bodily noises (I guess that thought came from me seeing a lot of refer to dragons breathing fire as "belching fire"), so it's not too difficult for him to pull it off.

An actual spark isn't needed, however, since I always envisioned the "venom" used to make the fire as one of those highly reactive ones that only needs oxygen to go off. If Melee's not breathing fire, then the "venom" is stored in a special gland in the back of his throat for safekeeping.

Okay, that clears things up. I'm just wondering, would Melee's skin then be resistant to fire considering he could create it?

As a matter of fact, it would! Granted, he's not immune to fire and heat, and he can still very much burn to death (it would just take longer), but his dragon blood does allow Melee to better handle fire and survive in a hot environment (though not on the same level as a "proper" dragon).

Put it this way: Something that would give you or me first or second-degree burns (such as, say, grabbing and moving a burning log from a fireplace without any sort of protection for a few seconds) would leave little to no lasting damage to Melee. Oh, it'll still hurt and holding onto that log for longer than a few seconds is going to indeed start burning him proper, but for the most part it would be like carrying a hot potato from the stovetop to the table; It hurts, yes, but as long as you hold it for too long it's nothing lasting and you won't need to break out the aloe vera or anything like that.

Okay, that makes sense. So he's more just resistant to fire, rather than impervious.
