When I was heading to Africa, I was very excited to see hippos in the wild. One reason was that I’ve seldom seen hippos in zoos, and when I have, they weren’t doing much. So, I was thrilled to see that hippos were everywhere on my safaris! At least, they were in and around all the rivers that ran through the parks I visited. They mostly hang out in the water or sun themselves on the shore during the day but move onto land to feed at night (they are grazing herbivores). These hippos are running into the Shire River—not sure what spooked or inspired them, but several rushed in at once.

I really fell in love with these beautiful and often-misunderstood creatures; I even recorded their song on my cell phone and use it as my ring tone! One of the highlights of my Africa trip was that I got to see wild hippos and elephants every day for a week! In Zambia, hippos came through the park to feed at night. I saw a large male right outside my chalet one night and got to watch for several minutes as he moved along the front of the chalet grazing on the grass. I was thrilled to be so close to a wild hippo!
