I like it without a border to be honest - great work.

Thanks!
I've got it centrally placed on my monitor at the moment. Monitor res is set to 1600x1200 (it's an ancient 21" Ilyama) and it looks good there, all bright, jolly and happy. I like happpy. I've been spring cleaning and chucking out things that don't fit in with happy. I'm absolutely convinced that if you surround yourself with things and colours that promote happiness it's hard to be anything other than happy I put borders on things almost as an experiment for how it would be presented for framing. In another life (when I was first out of art college) I was a picture framer and saw a heck of a lot of posters. Some were more successful than others, trying to work out that margin for framing is hard! (Not that I'm planning on releasing any prints but when I feel I'm good enough too, at least I'll have an idea on what to do
)

I feel sort of skeptical about borders when it comes to dA; in saying so, I feel that there's too much shit on a deviation page anyway, so adding a border to frame a picture within other frames makes it sort of difficult for me to accept the constant use of them. In your personal experience though, I'm sure you know what you're doing, but I feel that as far as presentation goes on dA, I'll stay clear of frames. They're just not important enough as the art itself sometimes.
This also has nothing to do with your work itself - it's the bomb going off!!!

I started adding borders to images when I was told the reason that people didn't look at my stuff was because it looked 'unprofessional' without borders. I used to be a picture framer (a long time ago) and know what the value of a good border and frame can do to a picture. Making something go from looking like $2 to $200. Thing is, I agree with you. I'm not sure that adding borders or frames actually adds to any of the images. I sometimes feel it truncates them and makes them look odd. If I were to render one large enough to frame as a poster then I would add a black border to it (well probably black) at a ratio of 1 (sides, and top) to 1.5 for the bottom. It adds a little room for the image to snuggle into the frame. I was taught that this ratio was more appealing to the eye, it does seem to work.
I went to an auction recently and picked up a lot of old pictures and frames (some of the pictures are bleurch!!). I was thinking of doing some fractal style 'decollage' on a large frame and then stuffing one of my images in it and taking it to a local gallery. One of the frames I picked up is just amazing!! It's one you'd expect to find with an oill painting, all gold and baroque. There is newspaper stuck to the inside edge dated 1907. It would look a treat with the right image in it!!
I love auctions. Other peoples rubbish become my pieces of visual delight.

I don't think your stuff look unprofessional without borders at all. In my honest opinion (after checking out several of your pieces with borders), I'd have to say that the border can in fact 'truncate' the image as you said in your last comment. But I also think that a black border functions well with anything - it's up in the air as far as borders go, and I totally understand what you're saying. I once wrote an essay about the conditions that affect a piece when it's viewed, and there are certainly many ways to degrade and and improve the way a viewer can observe a work.
Nevertheless, auctions are awesome. I wish I could go to more down here in Miami, but sometimes it's hard to find them since they're advertised to a certain amount and social caliber of people. Being a lowly citizen, my access to the types of events are limited, but I do think it's cool and wish I could go to more of them.
So, so sorry for the late reply, by the way! Finally, I've finished my semester! But alas, Summer A starts on Monday... I can't go back to school already!

I'm really lucky, we have an auction house in town that mainly sells household effects and junk. Once a month they have an antiques auction and there is some really impressive stuff that goes through there. Saw some oil paintings sell for £3,000 each just before Christmas. Yet I refuse to spend more than £5 on anything and am a great last second £1 buyer on items that no one seems interested in. The most I've spent there is £30, that was on a chair and only because it would go so well with a table I have. Both are dark wood, both are hand carved, the table is oriental and the chair very indian but they do go well together.
I was a picture framer, a lady came in with this nice watercolour and chose a frame and mount for it. After she was done I showed her what I would have chosen instead but it would cost £15 more than her choice. The manager had a look and said to her if she didn't like it we would frame it in her choice at that price. When the item had been framed it suddenly went from looking like something that cost £40 to looking more £400. She was really impressed. Framing and borders are huge impact if used creatively. I don't think I'd bother to even try and sell fractals though, there's very little market in it. I'm going to try and brush up my drawing skills.
Hey don't worry about late replies, I'm the queen of them. I've been really ill for the last month and my doctor laughed and said he wasn't surprised. I've had a temp of around 100 and he thinks a bacterial infection driving all the symptoms. I'm just so used to feeling lousy that new lousy often doesn't register until I'm almost bed bound!
Hope all the schooling is going well and you're enjoying it. I read your essays but don't feel well read enough to comment, other than to say they are extremely well writen and you present your thoughts and arguments in a beautifully structured way. You have a real talent for what you are doing.
s to you, take care and be well
