Description
Character design has always been one of my weakest fields - I struggle to create unique appearances and colour schemes. So please, lend me your expertise! Her name is Arcis, the small elf from the Unusual Friendship picture. Her design is aimed to contrast heavily against Tarynn's, with a dark colour palette, attractive features and a more healthy frame. Please let me know which design you like the most, or what aspects of each you think have merit. (I've include a lineart piece just in case anyone fancied slopping colours of their own on her!) At the moment I'm leaning towards the 2nd skin tone (minus the accidentally unmasked shading) with the 3rd outfit. What do you think?

Personaly I like th efirst design best. Lighter colors thaty are balanced and atractive. Also I don't like the darker skin tones. It just seems that elves are ment to be a bit fair skinned to me. Except mabye dark elves and others of that element.

Hmm, interesting thoughts, I always figured elves could be any colour given Kahla on the wiki but I will take it into consideration!

What because she has purple skin? That's cause she's a Mist Elf. They all do just like Crimson elves all have red skin. Plus it makes her sexy and unique since nobody has a giant purple naked gal besides her right? XD

Lovely overall design- I really like how you manage to get across a feeling from a character simply by creating such an expressive face. I think the second one is probably the one I'm drawn to most.

I think her hips need to be a little rounder on the right side for her to look more attractive. ^_^ Besides that, out of what you have so far...well I kinda hate it all personally. I like more colour personally, plus, though nice in its simplicity, I think her outfit is somewhat lacking in originality. But that's just my opinion. :33 Still, great drawing skills I think, so that's a plus. You're also a lot better at shading than I am.

Ahhh Nyaha, you and... Words XP Well you're certainly correct in saying that she needs to be curvier! I just suck at drawing that And you're right - her design is perhaps not as extravagant as some other peoples' works. But there are various reasons for that! I'm not a big fan of using physical gimmicks to make characters stand out; I prefer to try and let their interactions and expressions do that (plus it makes them easier to draw repeatedly as is required in a comic setting.) Tarynn's got an incredibly plain design after all XP
I understand you're expressing your opinions though, and I will certainly try to take it on board! Thanks mate

Karbo kinda beat my to the punch there . . . I rather like the middle one, but the top there is a bit too dark I think.
I rather like her overall design, and am quite curious to see how she fits into Tarynn's situation.

I flatter her with the truth. ^_^ She's a beautiful Elf. A shame she'd probably eat me on sight if I tried to tell her though...
You're welcome.

The middle looks fine. However, I think showing how her personality contrasts with Tarynn's through her expressions would do more than the current color scheme choices would, in my opinion. Actions speak louder than words, or colors even. That's about as helpful as my comments get. Sorry they don't really help much. (;^_^)

And a very astute comment it is man! You're absolutely right - physical designs pale in comparison to how she interacts with others. Thing is: I don't want to give too much away, but her personality is more of a clash with Tarynn's than a natural contrast or foil, so I was trying to maximise her physical differences to set her apart.
Given me something to think about though, thank you!

Wait, if she's supposed to be the small elf from your unusual friendship's entry, why don't you just use that one's design?

SimonLorimer In reply to Shady-Knight [2012-11-14 22:52:26 +0000 UTC]
It's a fair question! I hadn't really thought through her design too much when I made that and just went with a scheme that had the 'feel' of the character that I was going for. When I came back to it I found it a bit lacking, so I'm trying to sort that out now. Thanks for the comment
