Description
Let the geekiness continue!I'm taking geekiness to new dimensions, aren't I?
So I was a bit bored last night and started watching "Silence in the Library" and "Forest of the Dead" and my friend came over. When the latter episode came to a finish the forementioned friend said it'd be cool to have a notebook that resembled the TARDIS, and I of course agreed. And huzzah! Here's what that little bit of chat produced.
The notebook is A5 with 60 pages (Well, 120 if you count both sides of the pages, but that's just me trying to make it sound grander than it is). Materials include paper (made to look older with tea), cardboard, acrylic paints, basic things needed for bookbinding, lots of glue and luck.
I tried to make it durable, and definitely not as disheveled as the one seen on screen
I plan on painting in more detail, but first I need to make a trip down to the shops...
Anyways, hope this amuses someone

Amazing! I have seen a lot of people try and make that journal themselves and yours is by far the best!

Yeah...I like this....where would I buy a notebook that thick in Britain though?

I'm not from Britain, but I'm sure there are bookstores/artist supply shops or general stores that sell them. This one was hand made so I can't say you can find one exactly as thick as this one. But I'm sure you can find thick notebooks somewhere

I know that it takes a good portion of time just to create a tutorial for something like this, but I would be interested to know the general way that you created the leveling system on the cover. Was it carved or layered or what? I'd like to make my own and for the most part I just want to know a good starting point.

siniart In reply to DarkNevermore13 [2010-07-13 14:34:23 +0000 UTC]
Sorry for the late reply, but here goes:
The very base of the cover is thick cardboard. I cut out two rectangles from this foamy stuff (which is now hard on top because of the thick layer of paint), and then cut out the smaller rectangles to make the pattern for the doors. The sides and middle are just strips of the same stuff, the name of which I don't know. It's a couple of millimetres thick and I know kids use it to cut out shapes and glue them on paper etc. so it's sold in many places. I can't think of the name in English, nor in Finnish, so I can't look it up, but it's soft enough to easily cut with a knife/blade. Since then I have used thick cardboard and various other materials, so whatever you can easily cut and glue should suffice. But the point is: the levelled look was achieved by gluing the material onto the existing surface, no carving necessary in this model.
Hope this helps

Woah, that's almost exactly what I did. Lol, and I think you're thinking of craft foam, at least that's what I used. But thanks
