Description

I'm gonna be honest with you, folks: I was never quite sure what to think when I was making this strip. There were times I thought I was trying too hard, wasn't trying hard enough, being too harsh on Alexander J. Velicky, and everything in between. But all things considered, I think I like the final product.

That said, this is the last big info dump I'm going to foist on you. The main purpose of this strip was to do something I should have done weeks ago. In Falskaar, mostly due to the limitations of the game, a lot of the backstory is delivered through dialogue and in books. This is painfully boring to people who haven't (and more to people who have) played the mod, and it makes the new characters and lore seem more distant than the colorful and familiar faces that Bethesda gives us. To be clear: I do NOT blame the mod author for this. I do, though, blame myself for trying to follow suit instead of taking advantage of the resources available to me as a comic strip author-type person. So consider this my attempt to deliver a backstory that allows you to understand, and maybe care just a little more, about the natives of this zany world of Falskaar, their motivations, and their goals.

A lot of the backstory was provided by the in-game books added by the mod, but some of it was thrown in by me. I'll let you figure out which is which, just in case anyone who plans on playing Falskaar doesn't want me to spoil it. I will say, though, that Yngvarr really interests me as a character. In the mod, he acts like a pretty generic villain, but to me his backstory actually makes him more three-dimensional than some of the Skyrim villains. He's still a bad guy, of course, but I can't help but empathize with him just a little bit. Which made writing the flashbacks from his perspective very fun for me.

Loved all of the side notes in the back story. That was great! Such fun storytelling!

Glad you thought so! Parts like that always make me nervous.

It's quite clasical for the henchmen to fall asleep during flashbacks, standard procedure and all XD

Yngvarr should write a book. Either he'd write out a nice drama, or he'd make a good soporific bedtime-story. It's a win-win!

"Copies of Yngvarr's History of Falskaar flew off the shelves, but were later subject to mass recall when it was discovered that even a single reading could put an entire city to sleep. The book has been banned in Tamriel for fear that its sleep-inducing properties might be weaponized."

"On the other hand . . . ew."Β  You mix a lot of exposition with funny images and comments from the characters, so it doesn't feel long and boring. Great job.

Nicely done.

Yngvarr, of course, tells things from his point of view, which is entertaining.Β

Since no one is in his Hold, I'm guessing most of his people fled for a better life.

Thanks! I had fun with Yngvarr.

I think you're right. With no real incentive to hang around, they probably decided it was easier to relocate than to rebuild.

I didn't know that parts of Yngvarr's Hold were burning, so I also wonder if perhaps the mercenaries had a "wild party" there when the gold ran out, raping and looting the residents.Β

How can you so perfectly balance drama and dragon/Malacath humour in the space of a line!? It baffles the mind how perfect this is!

That part about being no fun at parties just reminded me of how Oblivion's Sheogorath said that Malacath was more popular at parties than Jyggalag; and Malacath is not popular at parties! >///U///<

nice story, like how comical it is at points and a bit of winks to tales like "dragon heart" and others, i would play the mod but my computer lacks space to host skyrim, gotta re-install windows 64x to get the 2gb ram working and only then i will be able to run nice games again.

Gotta credit the mod author for the DragonheartΒ parallel... which, believe it or not, I didn't even realize until it was pointed out.

I'll be honest, I'm glad this will be the last big info dump (and the tl;dr at the end made me laugh). Looking forward to the next strip!

Spoilers! It was Sean Connery the whole time!Β

You're not alone. I never realized going into this project that it would be so difficult transitioning from the game that everyone is familiar with to something more obscure, and the info dumps are/were a painful byproduct of that.
