Hello everyone!

I've been hard at work on Sacred vol.2 and while answering my cousins questions about screen tone i thought "WOW!! i'd love to do a tutorial on that!!" so here it is! :3

this is a little over view of the BASICS of using tone / adhesive tone/ comic tone/ manga tone etc. (it goes by a TON of names XD ) like it states in the tutorial, some things might seem like common sense BUT you'd be surprised how long it takes for one to learn these lessons LOL trial and error, messing up, and finding tone scraps on your pets are JUST a few of the issues! ROFL

i hope you'll enjoy this guys!! HAVE FUUUN!! and feel free to ask questions!!

YAAAY!! so glad this was able to clear things up a bit! i always wondered why the shadows in manga were made up of little dots, but once i bought tone i learned why! it's so much fun when i look through a manga and say "OH SHOOT!! I HAVE THAT TONE!!" LOL i'm such a dork! XDDD

Nah I think it's interesting. I do my comics digital, or I use manga studio. But it's also fun to learn how to do it the traditional way too! ^^

LOL i'm such a traditional artist, is wear! XD i wanted to get manga studio and a few others but i love the process of cuting and what not ; __ ; kind like how my friends love painting digitally because there's no mess and now money to spend, i LOOOVE the smell fo paint and the mess it sometimes makes XD it's a different experience for each medium :3 it's fun!! i'd like to try manga studio one day anyways! XD i'm curious about how one would "cut" the tone on that program and like you, i love learnign both the traditional way and the digital way!

Both are really fun!

sweety, thank you so MUCH!! so glad it could be of use to you!
peel it off after using it? as in, to re-use the tone?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lazuli-Wings In reply to SiSero [2010-06-12 00:11:42 +0000 UTC]

when i would rub the tone on i would think that it would appear on the paperXD then i just peel it off, now i know to keep it on.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SiSero In reply to Lazuli-Wings [2010-06-12 00:16:14 +0000 UTC]

oooooh!! NOW i understand!! OMG! that would be a great invention though! o U o (to have something that you rub and it would leave the design behind! ) basically, tone is like a giant sticker! just cut and stick :3 i'm glad i was of some help to you! <3

Lazuli-Wings In reply to SiSero [2010-06-12 04:06:07 +0000 UTC]

Saffy-in-the-Clouds In reply to ??? [2010-06-11 21:49:19 +0000 UTC]

see, this is why i'm going to use my toner gray markers instead of ANY screentone.

how much do screentones cost anyway?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SiSero In reply to Saffy-in-the-Clouds [2010-06-11 22:09:49 +0000 UTC]

LMFAO XDD traditional tone is seriously the most amazing mediums i've EVER used!! when i toned thos page, i was officially in love ; U ; --->[link]

the process only seems long and tedious, but it actually goes by REALLY fast and has such a beautiful look india ink washes are gorgeous for comics too * U *

it really depends on where you get them! some places and brands sell for $2.00, others are $4.00-if you're used to buying traditional materials like paint and markers, this is nothign new but honestly, most of the tone i have right now were gifts from super kind ppl who support me on DA tehy have no idea just how much they saved me ; A ;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Saffy-in-the-Clouds In reply to SiSero [2010-06-11 22:26:11 +0000 UTC]

so, total, how much do you think you spent (or would've spent, if it was a gift) on tones???

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SiSero In reply to Saffy-in-the-Clouds [2010-06-11 22:37:39 +0000 UTC]

last year i bought roughly $200 :3 i've only used about $50-$60 worth of tone on Sacred vol.1 so most of what i bought is being used for Sacred vol.2 XD just like my markers, i only have to buy new materials ever 2-3 years and thanks so my gift tone, i'll have tone for a while! ; U ;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Saffy-in-the-Clouds In reply to SiSero [2010-06-12 01:19:08 +0000 UTC]

You use deleter materials, right? 'cos I was thinking of buying the tone knife and hera from their website to try it out.. :3

minibubble In reply to ??? [2010-06-11 21:47:38 +0000 UTC]

wow o: I've been using screentones for like a year now and there were one or two things in there that I hadn't thought of before. Really obvious ones too :/ Like the pencil business for marking out things and using gauche . Why didn't I think of that?? that'd be so much cheaper than a gel pen ahahah XD <3

and you are sooo right about the little pieces getting everywhere XD *literally just found a piece on her dress* lolol
and a page from the second volume eeee ;U; looks so good!

Thanks for the tutorial >w<

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SiSero In reply to minibubble [2010-06-11 22:04:44 +0000 UTC]

LOL i know how it is! XD it took me some time working with this material to figure out those little "common sense" things! it seems so obvious, right?! when i thought of using the pencil for instance, i was like "WTH?! why didn't i think of this before?!"

HAHAHAHAA!!!! XDDD *Giname has found pieces on his cats!!
indeed!!! i LOOOOVED working on this page!!

you're VERY welcome sweety!!

masaothedog In reply to ??? [2010-06-11 21:25:55 +0000 UTC]

That's very helpfulXD. I had been afraid to use a pencil to help guide me while toning, actually. I don't know why. I'm paranoid.

And the last tip about stacking the tones is really helpfulXD. Because I usually stay up late toning, go to bed, and wake up covered in tiny pieces of tone. On my face and hands and everywhere@_@.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SiSero In reply to masaothedog [2010-06-11 21:57:08 +0000 UTC]

thank you hun! really? no need to be afraid! just draw lightly and it'll come right off with a rubber eraser! :3 LMFAO!!! XDDDD EVERYONE who uses tone knows about finding tone pieces on them in the morning!! *Giname have found pieces on his cats!!! LMFAO it's so retarded XD

masaothedog In reply to SiSero [2010-06-11 22:15:30 +0000 UTC]

I don't feel so bad about finding them on my corgi, then>w<.

Do you mind if I ask a question about how you make manga? I mean, if you use a crow quill/maru nib because I've been having some weird things happening when I use mine><.
