I can't believe I just did that so quickly. I was asked to do a walkthrough, so here it is. I borrowed some ideas from other artists all over the place, and some of them are my own observations. I should have done this as a video!
This was painted in Photoshop CS4, with a Wacom tablet. I highly recommend a graphics tablet if you're interested in digital art.
Anyway, if you enjoyed it, faving and such is always fun, but I would be ecstatic if you just linked me to your work that I've inspired or helped. I may even be able to offer some pointers! But maybe not, I'm not very pro
© to me. If you redistribute this, please leave the copyrights and whatnot intact, so people can find their way back to me. Thanks.
PS: If you find the spelling errors, you get a cookie. I may fix them later if I really feel the motivation.

You're very, very welcome. By the way, I moved to a new account several months ago, and I've since done a longer video tutorial. This one has treehouses and golden light too (weird, right?). Anyway, you can see the image here: [link] and the video link is in the description. I've become a much better artist since I made this
If you end up finding my stuff useful, and you start doing your own environment stuff, shoot me a note or a comment on my new profile so I can check it out!

OK.
Thanks a lot.
The one I've been working on has the treehouse and golden light and it was enough of a challenge
for my limited photoshop skills.
I think my gpu, core and ram are limited too since everything is so slooooooow when I try and do large backgrounds at a decent dpi.
I've still learned a lot.
I will start working on the longer video tutorial now. Thanks - if I ever have anything worth showing (highly doubtful since even though I've owned an intuos 4 for four years I still can't get the hang of painting with it. I still go back to doing things in hardcopy and scanning them it when I really want something done) I will let you know and comment on your new profile.
Thanks again!.

Sounds great, I wish you all the luck in the world!
And with the tablet, probably others have said this before, but just go for it. You can totally get the hand of it in a month. Just watch some painting videos so you get how the general flow works and then get practicing! Like I said, good luck.

could you follow this same basic process with a speedpaint of a person?

It's much easier to use the "chaos to concept" process on more loose subjects like landscapes. You'd need a pretty good understanding of human anatomy and posing to be able to speedpaint people into a scene this way. As far as portraits go, I would recommend doing them entirely in colour, from start to finish. Skin colours are too complex to paint in greyscale and then convert. Does that help?

Love the tutorial- I'm wanting to get some speedpainting done. Is there a triangular brush tip like available in Photoshop's presets anywhere, or do you need to make one yourself or download one from somewhere? (I use CS3.)

SkarValidus In reply to themutant [2011-07-16 20:54:36 +0000 UTC]
Awesome, it's good to hear from you. I made my own and there are no triangular presets that I know of. I showed you the base stamp in the tutorial so you can easily make a similar one or screenshot and edit the one I provided. Let me know if you end up using the tutorial!

Awwe, well I've seen people do incredible stuff with mouses, and I did a few back before I got my bamboo. Maybe you could practice picking colours and establishing depth? If you need a tablet to get you started, I recommend the Wacom Bamboo. Cheap and effective.
Thanks for the compliment!

lol I might but your program has a lot of stuff Gimp doesn't have... or stuff I just haven't figured out yet
I think I could make up more it though using other tools ^-^

SkarValidus In reply to That-Random--Artist [2011-05-31 21:47:56 +0000 UTC]
I've worked in GIMP a lot (I seem to remember that that's what you're using, right?) and it has the capabilities to cover the stuff in this tutorial. The biggest differences are the behaviour of the brush tool which will result in a more streaky style probably, and layer styles, which I intentionally veered away from. If there's something program-wise that you're struggling with, I may be able to help.

ohh cool! layer styles? from using layers?
ok thanks! then.. how do you set a layer to color? like in the tutorial O.o
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
SkarValidus In reply to That-Random--Artist [2011-06-01 22:40:11 +0000 UTC]
Layer styles allow for fancy glows, textures, strokes, bevelling, etc to be applied to a layer in realtime.
I believe it should be at the top of your layer palette, and by default layers are set to "Normal." So look for a drop-down menu that says "Normal" and also has screen, overlay, soft light, hue, saturation, etc.
