did you do this by photoshop? how can one create such nice colour progresses(don't know the right term^^). mine are shorter in their distance and look therefore too separated. i would be glad to get an answer by you, hoping that you understood my prob!

It might have something to do with the strength of your smudge brush. Try strengthening it a bit and using a brush with soft edges and see how that works.

Very handy. Doesn't say much, but you can still get a pretty good idea of how to make them using this technique.
I'm not done with this, but made a few small rocks on the side using this technique. Not the best, I was starting to get lazy, but still really nice.

Try more contrasting colors, they may allow a nice illusion of real light. No problem!

I like the idea of a smudge tool; This was very useful, allot easier
then shading rock line by line with the dodge/burn tool on PS.
