First the primary landscape was rendered in Terragen. After about 9 hours, I take the render into Photoshop and alter the color tones, contrast and create the planet for the background.

I render at 5540x4100, then shrink it down for better quality.

o.o That virtually makes no sense. You could render at 1000 x 1000 and have a DPI of 150 - 300 and if you shrink it down, it will be brought to that pixel ratio. Whether you use maya or 3dsmax, quality is controlled with anti-alias contrast. So if you render at, lets say, a sample of at least 16 samples per pixel, and a max of 256, you are guaranteed to get production quality anti-alias.

I know that. You also have to put into account the fact that Terragen isn't anywhere near as complex as either of those programs and anti-alias can only be done by manually increasing its quality by shrinking it down.

I don't use maya, I use 3ds max. But yeah, I could actually.

You know, a lot of people have told me to give it a try. Although, I'm still trying to learn 3ds max.

Go for Terragen, if anything its simpler to use and great for beginners, then if you want you can move on to either Terragen 2 or Vue.

I think i downloaded terragen 2, but there must be something wrong, is it really just 6.5 mb?!

Yeap. But you have to add other files to it. For all the Terragen stuff you'll need head here. www.terranuts.com
Or you could just ask around.

You'll need Terrains and atmosphere files. After that, everything else is optional.

Whatever works for you. Terragen is just my preference.

Fun piece. I can see why you loved working on it. I wish there was a little more detail in the shadows on the cliff face to appreciate the texture, but that is a personal thing. It also looks like the planet is in front of the last set of clouds--they see to be cut off...

Yeah, that's been bothering me a bit too. Nothing a little editing won't fix.

Excellent work! I especially like how you balanced earth, water and air, and how you contrasted the gentle curve of the planet in the background with the sharp lines of the landscape at the horizon.

I'm just now seeing this. This look amazing! Was this created from something like Photoshop or with something like Terragen?

It was originally created in Terragen, but the effects, planet, color enhancement and fine tuning was all done in Photoshop.

Sweetness. I have a few things I've attempted in Terragen in my gallery, but I haven't had the time to really create something like this though. I'd love to learn how to do it someday! ^.^

Who cares if your skills don't stack up, that would be even better because you could learn so much more from someone who is "better then you..."..although I think you should just go for it. Build one of the nice terrains and send the psd over, you'd be surprised what could be done to a simple terrain such as this..waterfalls,a nebula,an outpost building, something in the water...I honestly think you should take a look at this piece again, and maybe paint back mountains where they are the same old flat..maybe even add a foreground element, you have potential just give it a try.
