Julian's dragonbone blade.
I had a sudden but brief conversation with Julian recently. He doesn't talk to me much, but when he does it's usually out of nowhere and something that shoves my thinking off tracks and haunts me for weeks. This time it went something like this:
-
"I gotta hand it to them. Those resmords have no perspective, but they do have the right idea when it comes to hunting dragons."
What's that supposed to mean?
(shrug) "There's a lot of good material in them, if you have what it takes to get it."
What the hell do you know about dragonhunting??
"What do you think I know about dragonhunting?" (leaves)
-
Aaand then I'm left guessing.
There are many kinds of dragons in Tharinas - both sentient and animalistic, shapeshifting and not - but they generally share many base characteristics. They are magical beings and live very long lives, building a natural magic resistance as they age. Their bodies (scales, horns, teeth, claws, bones, eyes, wings - everything) become coveted material for all kinds of uses: magical ingredients, medicine, artifacts, armor and weapons. The inherent qualities they build up over time attract all kinds of adventurers, poachers and collectors, which has led to most dragons living very secluded lives either in solitude or in communities with other dragons. Shapeshifting ones have slightly better opportunities to interact with other beings, but it only takes one magically sensitive outsider with ill intents to put the dragon in danger.
So with that in mind, I'm not surprised in any way that Julian knows a thing or two about dragons. Neither is it surprising that he possesses some items made from dragon materials. My little wizard (yes I will call you wizard until you show up to chat more often) has spent a good chunk of his life seeking power and has mostly done so through magic, so I think it only makes sense he'd have ended up with this stuff.
Like, I just wish he had mentioned this sooner. What makes this knowledge interesting is that he might end up interacting with some of ZeRaLeX 's dragon characters at some point in the near future. If he shows up geared with dragon materials, he will have some kind of reason to drag attention with them. I just need to figure out what.
I haven't talked about Julian in ages, mostly because he hasn't had the chance to do anything in a while. He's just been seething from the lack of opportunity for a year or so in-universe, and the shallow allyship with the resmords ended abruptly when they decided Julian had fulfilled his purpose to them.
As a brief recap, Julian is a Blessed One similarly to Brandon and Nicole - a human from a different universe who got isekai'd into Tharinas by a foreign trickster god who granted them agelessness. Julian has been around for maybe 200 years and he's a very isolated guy. A truly antisocial personality, absolutely loathes everyone he comes across. He's a skilled sorcerer and focuses on illusion magic, suggestion and mind control, areas of magic infamously difficult to pull off without team support due to long cast times and concentration requirements. He has found his own ways to bypass some of those weaknesses, so paired with his innate ability to plan ahead extremely well and be incredibly patient, he's a real threat if he wants to be. And usually he does.
He's the main antagonist one could say. I don't consider my characters to be filling any specific role like that, but Julian has kind of carved himself into this one. He made fishy deals with Haado to gain power, he pissed off Verno which snowballed into some big trouble for other people, successfully rid Tharinas of its last curator, and destroyed Kajo's corporeal form when he was in brief possession of Infinity, with intent to do so to every other god-like being he can find. He can be blamed for fucking up the lives of the core cast more than anyone else, and he'll do so again if he gets the chance. Now if only everyone would stop bickering amongst each other and focus on fighting him, now wouldn't that be something.
Closing note: He doesn't call it a sword, and it's not a two-handed weapon despite the two handles there. I think it's more like a large dagger with creative ways to wield it. And surely has some nasty magical properties I'm yet to figure out.
