Description
Yes, I'm still doing comics. Sorry, I've been busy busy busy. This is illustrating the point that, the vast majority of the time, talking birds like cockatoos haven't the faintest clue what they're saying. They hear stuff repeated to them enough times, they will say it. They will say it quicker if you make a big fuss about it and give them treats when they begin to work on a new phrase you've been yelling at them.
But sometimes they latch on to certain phrases because they just seem to like how it sounds.
But then there's Wiki, the cockatoo that imitates the whole espresso machine sequence to amuse himself.

*dies* god, that's great
that's way too much like a macaw that I ended up with that had lived in a pet store for 26 years. LOL

I think it's more important to teach your pet birds how to swear. *remembers the mynah bird from "The Guild of Thieves"*

Hee hee.
I'd get a pet bird, but I don't want to have something that can fly and shits everywhere. And I'm afraid of birds.

Those seem like very good reasons to avoid them. They can be extremely affectionate, but are very messy and can be dangerous.

LOL! This is cute. I love cockatoos... Maybe they don't know what they're saying, but they sure are enthusiastic about it. I met one who would screech his head off if you didn't say 'Hello' back to him, and then there was Louie, the Petsmart bird... The sign on his cage said he'd say "What up?" if you spoke to him, so I stood at his cage repeating over and over again, "What up, Louie? What up?" All I got out of him was a look of pure avian disgust, and finally he moved to the other side of the cage.
...now which of us was the one who mindlessly repeats things?

Right, people really sound stupid when trying to teach birds to say things. Works though. Perhaps if you returned to Petsmart every day for a month, and stood there saying "what's up", he'd eventually get it. But perhaps not: he has no reason to work for you, the person he likes best is the employee that brings him his food!

Oh man, that's fantastic. Love the third panel of Wiki yelling... poor guy! I had a neighbor who owned an African Gray called "Pete" who would immitate his wife. Particularly the noisy, argumental conversations. "John! What is this bill for???!!" Was a personal favorite of mine.

hehe, that's amusing. I've known some birds to yell at themselves the way their people would: "Shh, be quiet, silly bird!"

That's just awesome. Wiki and the espresso sequence. I do that sometimes too, to amuse myself.
And, of course, always glad to get another Lab Slave.

hehe, thanks. They imitate the trainer's whistles too, and us saying "Good boy" to the dolphins. Sometimes they help out in sessions with their cheering. Definately the peanut gallery.

I love how the dolphin sighs through his blowhole. *still desperately hoping someone will give up in January*

I'm not sure, I'm afraid it's not the clearest comic in the world. Oh well. So far no one has commented with a "Wha?" but then again, would they care enough to have it explained?
They do! They also chuff with annoyance. Right into your face. Yuck, boogers.

which is okay, birds don't have spit.

The birds at work say several things, but not as many as some birds can (they're obviously not the priority, of course). I've seen bird shows where the birds will say certain things on cue: "Warm up!" and the bird says "La la la LA la la la..." in exchange for an almond. Dex at the lab will sometimes gobble like a turkey when you ask her to. Sometimes and only if she really wants the treat that you're offering, and she goes through a whole bunch of other noises before she arrives at turkey.
I've had parakeets that talked. "My name's Gus." "Pretty bird" "Wanna fight?" "Whatcha Doin'?" "I like toast".
