Description A flat colored reference sheet commission for =vtforpedro of her character Yzara!

Can you guys tell that I'm really digging these reference commissions? They take a while what with all the feedback that's passed back and forth, but I'm in love with the results. I learn something new every time!
I hope you all enjoy them too! :>

I posted a few WIPs of this to my tumblr:

I took a look at the tumblr WIPs, do you sketch and line traditionally?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skysealer In reply to Kaylimepie [2012-05-27 17:02:26 +0000 UTC]

Nope, it's 100% created from scratch in Photoshop. Not to say I can't sketch traditionally of course, I just prefer the convenience of a digital canvas.

ah ok, just with all the little detail lines you do, its mroe common with traditional lineart, DAMMIT THE ENVY!

I'm really enjoyin the grainy paper effect, it makes this look alot more athentic (combined with the amazingly detailed description) one could almost believe this is real. I also love the fact that you gave her a design without going overboard, which not a lot of people can do.

Beautiful! I thought she was a water dragon at first for some reason. After having read everything though the design makes perfect sense for a hot, sandy environment . She'd be a pain to draw too many times but she's definitely awesome, well done both of you!

Skysealer In reply to CaraidArt [2012-05-26 12:55:16 +0000 UTC]

She is a bit complicated to color, each detail shot took quite a while to finish. She's a beauty though in my eyes, so it was well worth the effort, I think.
Thank you for the lovely comment, Lhune!

I bet you do! :D These are so enjoyable to read, so it can't be less enjoyable to learn straight from the artist you're cooperating with! Wish I'd get the experience, too. xD One day, one day!
I can't help but feel a bit uneasy about the birdy pecs and batty wings, though. D: However, I'll... I'll need to read more about them to say anything about whether I'd think it'd work or not. I'm really no master in these things.
Anyways, this thing looks darn pretty, woman! Just makes me want to get one of my characters done by you, since I'm awkward with making refs and you're better than good at them. I could put up a sale and see whether I'd be able to pull off some money.

I was talking to =SageKorppi about the fusion of the two anatomies a very short while ago, we both agreed that the combination of the two is a strong one. But! These are fictitious animals so it shouldn't matter much anyway. XD

Alright, then. :) I just don't know all too much about the wing-musculature, so I wondered how it'd work and all. I guess I'll just need to study more on these things! :D

I love these ref sheets as much as you do, you always give the creatures a wonderful sense of balance and structure. I also love crested heads, makes them feel almost velociraptor-ish with that arched neck.
There's only one thing that consistently shows up in your anatomy that irks me: the wing-arms are set too far back on the spine. I'm sure the shoulder bone itself connects right above the front leg where it should be, it's just that the concept of the "rib-cage muscle" attaching to the wing like it does just feels... off?

Okay, I've said it, feel free to punch me into the next century. XP
That said, I truly love the way you do wings, it makes my mouth water every time I see them from you!

Skysealer In reply to WanderingDragon379 [2012-05-26 12:26:32 +0000 UTC]

I never attach the wing and forearm scapula so it might look strange to you if you do, but to do so would be to combine the musculature of the two limbs -- when the wings would move the arms would move as well, not good for flight or for walking/running. I don't have a quadruped anatomy diagram at the moment, I do have a bipedal version that illustrates what I'm saying. It's a bit dated, but is still mostly accurate to what I'm meaning - [link]
In Yzara's case the wings may look too far placed behind the forearms, but if I were to draw up the skeletal you'd find that they need the room due to their size. The center of gravity is placed right in the area between the forearm and wing, which is essential for flight (CG is never actually smack dab in the middle of the animal but rather slightly forward of the wing).

Wheee! A new ref sheet! Your ref's are so detailed and complicated (nah that's not the right word I think), that must have taken sooo much time >.<
I like making ref's, too. As you said, these things make you learn something new every time. I'm currently drawing a ref for my own dragon species but I'm having lot's of troubles with it. My sketches don't seem to look right and my dragons are missing something special. D:

Skysealer In reply to Araless [2012-05-26 12:51:25 +0000 UTC]

I think complicated might be the right word, if not 'in-depth' or 'compendium'. Cx
My only advice for your predicament is don't over think it, sometimes simple is absolutely the best route to take! You don't need a crazy 'designer dragon' for it to be special, think of the personalities and histories that are incorporated into the character as well!

I was wondering how much would a species sheet cost. So I know how much I need to save.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skysealer In reply to Rhavkoress [2012-05-26 01:18:15 +0000 UTC]

It all depends on the complexity of the character I'd be portraying alongside what kind of reference you'd want (line art, flat color, etc. etc.). :>
The prices can really fluctuate!
