Description Bradgate Park, Leicestershire

The oaks and the pines, and their brethren of the wood, have seen so many suns rise and set, so many seasons come and go, and so many generations pass into silence, that we may well wonder what "the story of the trees" would be to us if they had tongues to tell it, or we ears fine enough to understand.

Remarkable oak.  I saw some like this on the way from York to Edinburgh.

Thank you. Yes, oaks are quite common here in the UK and we have some very old ones. You may have heard of the Major Oak in Sherwood Forest, which is thought to be between 800 and 1000 years old and has a girth of 33 feet!!

Thank you - I may have said it before in the comments but I think trees in winter are more interesting than when adorned with leaves in the summer.

Yeah, I agree! It's cool being able to see the branch structure without the leaves covering it all up.

Strange how summer seems to be the least attractive of the seasons in 'tree world'. Come autumn and ... wow!!!

It is indeed an awesome tree and the interesting thing is that it looks so different in each season; so much so that I went back in the summer and couldn't decide which tree it was I'd taken, back at the end of winter!!

The simplicity and beauty of nature is humbling. It's such a shame that we can never do it complete justice but, it is an enjoyable challenge to try! Thank you for commenting.

Yeah, great stories sleeping in that beautiful tree! So many things it must have seen in its life from above the hill ...

smallsofthamish In reply to LilliTheSquirrel [2014-03-22 17:21:47 +0000 UTC]

Some of the old oaks in the Park are well over 500 years old, which means that Lady Jane Grey (the tragic young Nine Days' Queen born in 1537) may well have gazed on them or walked amongst them. It's an amazing thought. I doubt this tree is over 500 years old but I'll pretend it is!!

I love to think what old trees, mountains, rivers, buildings and even animals like turtles or parrots might have seen in their long life.

They would be quite shocked I imagine!! They could probably teach us a great lesson: that much is learned from being silent and quietly watching. I wonder if the World would be a happier place if humans behaved more like trees ....

I'm still fighting to "catch up" so not surprising if one gets lazy! Sometimes it's just nice to have a bit of a break.

We all look forward to the time when you have the strength, time and inclination to submit more squirrel wonders!!

After I've used 1,5 GB the provider slows down the speed for the rest of the month - and then good night, bits and bytes! So I have to be economical with my uploads.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

smallsofthamish In reply to LilliTheSquirrel [2014-06-10 08:32:57 +0000 UTC]

poor you! We've also had problems with the provider. Having used very little of our 2GB since the beginning of time (!) our provider suddenly decided that we had gone over our limit within 3 days, when we had done nothing different!! No amount of complaining and reasoning could convince them that it wasn't possible. Their answer was to bump us up to unlimited and charge us 5 times the cost of 2GB! So we said we were finding another provider and, guess what ... they gave us a special deal which basically gives us 'unlimited' at 2GB cost but, that's only for a year so we expect another battle in a few months time.

It does look similar. The difference is that, this one would not fit into my lounge .... or even my house!!
