Description
It's been a while since I posted a tutorial anyways. This is an extremely basic shading technique. As crude as it is, I sometimes still use this as it is very fast....
also cause I am lazy.......
With this technique, I can rapidly shade and colour pictures. Found that especially for comics, it is very useful so as not to leave the thing half-done due a loss of inspiration.
Using triple shading or one of it's variants, I can often get past shading in bout less than half an hour and so giving me more time for effects.
Though more recently I had started advancing and trying various improvements on this tutorial.
This tutorial is mostly supposed to be used in conjunction with a lineart tutorial. (such as [link] )
Methods used here are NOT hard-and-fast rules but more of guides that you can use for more experimentation.
Beyond this stage normally I will do minor effects and so on. May do a tutorial on that if anyone is interested.
Model used was an old Drakenfox sketch somewhere in my scraps heap.
Some of you may recognise the Drakenfox...... that little bundle of horror.
Hope this is useful to anyone out there that's lost.

You're welcome this is quite an outdated tech for me though.

no wonder it's old for you. But for a photoshop-newb like myself, where even the most basic stuff is hard, then it's really helpful with stuff like this

well, I did too, then later returned to burn and dodge to get some effects.

Well when I get Photoshop back (today I hope) the next few requests I get I'll give it a try if I get that oppertunity. So thanks for posting the tutorial up.

Hmmmmm well, this style is a extremely fast shading method. Mostly use this if I decide to colour fast. Also it became the basis for any more interesting shading methods.

by the one.. on your drawing.. you mostly never use anti-alias? like the one here
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Snowfyre In reply to WhiteyDragoness [2007-08-04 04:49:10 +0000 UTC]
Well, I almost always use some form of anti-aliasing. be it the manual one or the quick and lazy method.
Though this one is a shading tutorial, not an anti-aliasing tutorial..... so I left those bits out.
Also anti-aliasing is one of the last few steps that I do when I draw. It normally occurs once I start with the effects.... Cause I prefer to work with crisp images for shading and before..... easier to select with the various tools you see.

Basic colouring? Oh, That's easy. Just use the paint bucket tool.
Unless you're talking bout the lineart. That is different..... and I have a tutorial on that.

ok.. so that is how you do it
but how does everyone get those nice pretty lines ( not pencil or pen)

Oh that.
Like I said, it's in a separate lineart tutorial that I made much much earlier.
Link is in the picture's description.

Your welcome.
I normaly do color shading.
I think that many would like a basic texture tutorial.

Snowfyre In reply to Dragon-Furry [2007-08-02 00:25:07 +0000 UTC]
Mine's centred round burn-shading. Though I do know that there are 4 shading paths: Burn/dodge, Black/white translucence painting, Black/white layering and manual colouring.
Though the basic texture involves only how to do fur (simple), minor anti-aliasing, basic eyes and orbs.

You can allso build shading up with the lasso tool. Good for small spikes to fluffy parts of the shades if your going for the cell-shaded look.
I'm thinking about doing some tutorials about the glow and silver FX. Just need a good picture to show it at.

Snowfyre In reply to Dragon-Furry [2007-08-02 11:12:10 +0000 UTC]
Oh. that too. I do know that there's probably tons of different shading methods. (one of my friends uses some unusual technique with the pen tool and vector art) Though admittedly I haven't tried the lasso tool before.
The only tools I used so far are paintbrush, pencil, magic wand, mask, smudge, burn/dodge/sponge, layers, shapes and the various filters.
Yes, I'm a really simple artist
Ah Tutorial fever

What else do you need? Part from the burn tool that is must the same tools I use. Plus a lot of filters and well I like the polygon/lasso tool to build shapes.

Snowfyre In reply to Dragon-Furry [2007-08-02 13:02:25 +0000 UTC]
Odd. I use the polygon tool quite a bit, but haven't got to experimenting on the lasso.
Actually those are bout all the tools I use. That leaves with bout half or more of photoshop that I don't actually touch.

Dragon-Furry In reply to Snowfyre [2007-08-03 00:39:12 +0000 UTC]
The polygon tool is good for hard shapes and shades. The lasso can be used the same way but to make more soft shapes. Like the water I did on DF in the shower.

Well, you don't need photoshop for it. You could try downloading GIMP. That one is about as powerful as photoshop (quite similar too), and it's completely free.
Just run a google search for it.

theEyeoftheMind71 In reply to Snowfyre [2007-08-01 00:35:47 +0000 UTC]
I'll try, but I'll probably have to skirt a ton of security stuff and piss off my dad.
then again, it would probably be worth it just for that.
and I'm only half kidding.

Snowfyre In reply to theEyeoftheMind71 [2007-08-01 01:55:12 +0000 UTC]
Nah,
Just go to [link] the GIMP website.
download the runtime environment and the GIMP itself.
And you're done. It's completely free.... just do warn you that GIMP is a little user unfriendly and so you may have to spend a while at the tutorials.
But it'll be worth it.

well, my dad blocks me from downloading files and stuff, and he's a computer master, so I have to blindly navigate my way through.
