Goolings are a type of Plantoid or Feral Aethonite.

A Gooling is the name given to immature/child Aethonites as they grow to reach their finalized forms. A gooling starts its journey as a mindless lump of purplish black slime that is coughed up by a parent. After a few minutes pass, it will usually grow eyes to start observing its surroundings. The Gooling's goal is simple, use its malluable biology to make the ideal form for its continued survival. It looks at its surroundings, the adults around it, how they behave, and the conditions they are exposed to, and copies and perfects their genetic choices. A Gooling has about 24hrs to figure this all out, so they develop rapidly into their final stage. Making and executing a biological plan is only half of it though, as they are also limited by the amount of resources they have available to them. If they don't get enough fuel, then they can't get the mass they need to make the form they want and may need to compromise or change their strategy. This means all Goolings start with the Gluttony Affinity by default and will eat anything they think they can get the better of.
Once a Gooling has finalized its choices, the outer skin hardens and becomes shell-like for one hour, before the Aethonite will pull it off and emerge from the shed as an adult. The Gooling's color choices start to appear in the later stages, but do not reach their full vibrancy until post-molting.

All species of Aethonites have Goolings, but some Goolings have hard-wired blueprints that help them make their choices even without a parent to witness. This is especially true for Plantoids who have pretty laid out biological plans their goolings seem to be able to copy without forming eyes or conciousness. Some Goolings that come from intelligent Aethonites may likewise start a bit smarter than non-intelligent counterparts. In general however, Goolings are very fragile. They prefer to hide away from threats and watch from a distance. It's not uncommon for them to squeeze themselves into cracks in walls and simply bide their time. In addition Goolings are highly cannibalistic and will frequently attack and consume each other to get the fuel they need for their bodies. If a Gooling is kept fed, the likelyhood of this cannibalism happening drastically decreases, but is never off the table completely.

In addition to the actual creature name, the language uses the Gooling symbol for all words with meanings similar to infant/baby/child/etc...
Is frequently used as an insult to adults / a symbol for shaming others. Ex. An Aethonite may carve this symbol into a rivals house to humiliate them.
