Description No, not THAT Tree of Knowledge. I'm not the religious sort. This tree is, if not outright good, certainly quite benign. Eating its fruit won't do you any harm. (Eating the little videocameras hidden in the roots, on the other hand, might be quite uncomfortable. Eating videocameras is never a good idea. All those wee glassy bits--faugh!)

At any rate, this was commissioned as a preliminary sketch for a tattoo design. A tattoo artist will adapt it later, that it might be etched permanently into some poor sod's back.

The original drawing is approximately 18 inches tall, and has lost many details in compression. Please check out the attached detail images & zoomed-up version if you're interested in a better look. (Unfortunately, detail #1 is right on the scan seam, so some distortion and blurring has occurred. Sorry!)

just a question, i've been browsing your whole gallery, ( by the way you are an amazing artist !! )
what kind of paper do you use to draw ?

socar In reply to elephteria1990 [2011-07-02 02:49:25 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! It is Canson Mi-Teintes paper, mostly, in various colours (usually flannel grey or sand).

This is STUNNING. But, personally, I think it's a bit too detailed to be a tattoo. That's just my opinion, though.

socar In reply to nicolepitchit [2009-05-07 01:41:19 +0000 UTC]

The tattoo was adapted from this design, not copied directly. Small lines were converted to shading.

socar In reply to Spell [2008-09-18 18:34:33 +0000 UTC]

Looking at as many trees as possible helps. They often grow in random, messy-looking ways, which looks more interesting than if you draw them looking neat and perfect.

slave-to-the-muse [2008-08-18 06:53:54 +0000 UTC]

I personally like both the big and small versions. In the small one you get the big picture, the general idea. I wouldn't have noticed the fact that it's a woman in the large version. Both are nessisary.

if you put the word birth on the bottom of the picture and the word death at the top of the picture, that would be something cool, something different. just think about it.

Amazing. I love the way the human body is incorporated into the tree. It seems a little bit like a Christ image, though I know you said you're not religious. It's the way the 'head' of the human part seems bowed, and the way they seem to be hanging with their arms above their head.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

socar In reply to Delanthaenas [2005-08-01 16:42:17 +0000 UTC]

You're actually not the first to point that out--a friend of mine mentioned it in an e-mail this morning. It was quite unintentional, the Christ effect. I wasn't thinking along those lines. If it's there, it's there, though. Oops!

Glad you like it, anyhow!

vani-chan [2005-08-01 09:58:42 +0000 UTC]

It really demands a closer look, sicne the smaller version provides a poor vision of all that's installed inside the tree.. but the large version surely enlightened me, and this is a wonderful piece of rich detail and uncommon concept.. I liked it very much.. (although I'm not yet sure I'd have such a thing tattoed on my back..!).. Wonderful show of skills none the less
