Description Last page of Mortal Engines (for now..?) Tom putting a sword through dear old Shrike. I don't like Tom. ALSO, I don't like Hester's last line: "What did you do that for?" as if Tom's just pinched her on the cheek rather than killed the one chance that she had of becomming practically immortal. I've only just read the first of this quartet series, and I do hope Mr Reeve's writing improves..I've been told it does.

if you read the book it says that shrike hit tom in the chest and yet here in the picture tom is getting hit in the head. Come on! if you areΒ gonna do something like this at least get the facts right!

you know ive read A Darkling Plain and i could spoil this for you but that's beside the point, Hester would be immortal but it wouldn't be hester... or would it? read A Darkiling Plain to figure out what im talking about

I didn't think other people even knew about mortal engines, it's nice to see a semi-existent fan base

i hate tom, he is such a whiny person its unbelievable. he is like that guy in the corpses bride at the start.
1) loves a pathetic lover at the start
2) is scared by everything
3) in the end he is exactly the same as at the start
4) finally he kills the best character

these are reasons i hate tom, and i will not let up on it

tom loves her. he doesn't want her dead. you should get that if you read the whole book. even hester agrees that he did the right thing.

wouldn't it be sort of cool if hester was a desendant of Kit Solent/Shrike's children (if you have no idea what i'm talking about, read Fever Crumb)

Does Shrike actually have dread locks cos almost every drawing of has dread locks...

He has wires which plug from the back of his head into his chest, so yeah I think they look like dreads! He is well designed in the book.

Yes, I think that Shrike is the most creative character created.

Niice.

I loved the way Reeve tells stories *__* The characters are so realistic.

Reeve is my favourite author; and Hester my favourite heroine. The consistencies and flaws of his characters' personalities makes them unique.

my sentiments exactly.
predator's gold is a little better, i hope to get the last two from my local library tomorrow to sample them.

i like these comics of yours, the colours are so vibrant, and a great interpretation of the text.

I'm pretty sure the STalker's name is Grike xD And Reeve's series is actually simply written, but that makes it alive and easy to follow.

I really like Tom, actually. His pitiful boyish attitude throughout the series is endearing. He's a needed part in the plot.

I've lookeda t the comics, and the coloring and figures are drawn quite well ~ Good work.

It's totally Shrike in Reeve's original books. The american editors always like to change small things like that, though. :/

And I agree, Tom is adorably naΓ―ve. :3

sun-shined In reply to atomicqueen [2010-10-01 16:46:05 +0000 UTC]

They changed it in the american version... /why/?! 0: )

And yeah, I really liked Tom actually he's naive and kind but that makes him endearing. I find it refreshing compared to the usual type of protaginist.

atomicqueen In reply to sun-shined [2010-10-02 12:22:40 +0000 UTC]

Check the wikipedia page, Shrike is definitely the original name. American editors are notorious for changing things in Australian or British books. Look at Philip Pullman's Northern Lights, which was turned into "the Golden Compass" in America (which doesn't even refer to the Alethiometer, according to the author :/) I could go on. It's a pet peeve of mine--not because I have to put up with it, I suppose, but because all those little things compromise the author's original work. Anyway. I don't know why they changed it. I can't find any reason why. Perhaps it's linked to the character of the same name in the Hyperion series... but that's a long shot.

Yeah He seems a realistic character, I think (he reminds me a whole lot of my little brother, head in the clouds!) And even though his naivety is a positive thing in terms of how it keeps him going, it's also something of a flaw... Reeve just really knows how to flesh out characters incredibly well. :3

sun-shined In reply to atomicqueen [2010-10-02 16:17:22 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I'm English, I've always known him as Shrike, I'm just wondering why they felt the need to change his name. 0: )

Northern Lights suffered a lot in america in general... just look at the movie. 8(

Yeah, I think Hester is phenomenal, she's bat-shit crazy but it makes her strangely appealing to read about. And combined with Tom's innocence and naivety they make a great pair. C:
Have you read Fever Crumb? The Arlo and Fever combo is similar in that they're opposites that work well. 8)

6 years late to the conversation, but ...
I think that Tom and Hester complement each other well, in that through them Reeve says a lot about the role violent and non-violent people play in the world. By violent/non-violent I'm not just referring to physical acts but also to their approaches to life and its problems.

Tom's naivety and belief in peoples' goodness is easily crushed and almost fatal in that harsh world. Hester on the other hand is survivalistically ruthless and makes the kind of hard calls that a civilised society can't tolerate. Without the other person they are each impossibly flawed people, and by tying them together Reeve shows how both aspects are necessary.

Also the ending of book 4 was one of the most emotional moments of my life. If you've read it, I'd like to hear your thoughts. If not, well you at least have my recommendation

Also also, great artwork! Very well captured and if you did more I would absolutely help fund it

they changed the name because in america a shrike is a type of gun but for britain its a bird

Aaaaaand Natsworthy's hormone fueled charge. Ouch. I actually imagioned him going flying a couple feet away, but this works too.
On Hester's reaction: If you look at the book again (I can't believe I remember this) she says it with more emotion (she starts crying, if I remember correctly) and then blows her top at Tom, and only stops when they both get lit up by Panzerstat Bayreuth going mushroom cloud and Anna Fang showing up again.
Oh, and you'll be pleased to know that at the end of the third book in the series Tom's life goes down the shit hole and it gets worse during the fourth, which should make you happy.
Still, I love it, especially how you handled Hester. I Love the panel where she takes the scarf off. Nice.
I don't get why she complains about her scar, cause she looks f-ing hot.
Lets just hope you do more.

hm really? I have yet to read the other books in the series, but i'm tol it improves writing-wise. which is good as I could barely get through the first one with the poor way that Reeves writes.

Cique In reply to SofieGraham [2009-05-13 18:55:47 +0000 UTC]

People have said that they get better in the third and fourth but I couldn't be bothered to read them in the end. It was a good idea, but in the end I couldn't really relate to any of the characters, and by the end of the first book everyone seemed to have died which annoyed me.
