Description My very first shadow box!

I've learned sooo much from this one - and yes I've made a lot of mistakes

I started this one before I had my shadow box. I knew the measurements of the box and I made calculations and everything should fit perfectly! But... I thought the depth of the shadow box equaled the space I had to work with - it didn't. The measurements where made from the outside of the box so all of a sudden there wasn't room for the back to go on

There was suppose to be a light inside the shadow box but there wasn't enough space anymore. So this one isn't going to have it's own light but it'll stand in the windowsill and get natural light. Oh well - the next one will have it's own light INSIDE the box!

There is a small pond that one of the wolves is drinking from. I've actually made it so there should be a reflection of the wolf in the water. I found out that I had made too many layers and there isn't enough light that can get through so you can actually see the reflection. That's too bad - but now I know how to fix that!

My photography skills aren't the best so I hope you can see it

Sorry for the late reply. Ive got some time problems at the moment
On really important thing on working with paper is that you look after the "machine direction". Paper has one and when you put some papers together they need do have the same. Otherwise they will get out of shape after some time. You can the the fiber on some papers, but not on the most ones. You can check it with bending it in a light bit. In one direction it will be easier without folding/ crippling it. In the other on you will feel a small resistance. I hope that was understandable Bad english

Thank you so so much for the tip! I didn't know this!
I did understand and just tried it with a piece of paper - I'll start keeping this in mind!

Does it matter which way you fold the paper? (Folding over the machine direction or beneath it?) Or is it just important that all the paper is folded in the same direction? I hope that makes sense too

Hey, I´m happy if I can help you.
It matters when you use very thick paper or work very small. With these its harder to make clear foldings when you dont fold it in the right direction . But its more important, when you clue something together or work in a very moist area. Because the the paper would "work" against each other.
When you just folding it and put it together its not so fatal if you had forgotten it. ^^

That's all the things I'm doing right now actually! Working with semi thick paper, small and glueing together.
But which direction is the right direction? Folding over the "machine direction" - so working with the papers natural bend. Or folding beneath the "machine direction"? I'm sure you're going to say the one with the natural bend - but I just want to make sure

Thank you so much once again!

go with it and everything is fine But the very best is you try it and look wich on is the best. Some papers are different from others^^
Are you working with a bone folder?

no prob^^
When you use one of thes you can make clear foldings even against the natural bend But thats also an arstist choice. I love working with it, when I´m binding books and make my fanfoldings ♥

 Well done!
I'm curious, do you plan on covering the shadow boxes with glass to protect the paper?

sofierimmer In reply to Breathe-by-Claire [2017-01-08 17:19:10 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!
There is already glass covering the frame of the shadow box - I'm glad you can't see any reflections in the photo

It looks absolutely magical!
How thick is the paper, to create such small detailed cuts?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sofierimmer In reply to TrollGirl [2017-01-08 14:50:38 +0000 UTC]

Just the vibe I was going for!
This paper is 158g - I haven't tried anything else though. My thought was it had to be a little thick to stand upright, even though I've cut in it, but still thin enough so the light can shine through  Maybe it could be thinner? I'm not sure

me too, although it sometimes annoys me when I have started a complicated Project... then I just want to get it done and then the mistakes start and I am unhappy with the results... so at the Moment I do rather short Projects
(and also I have a Trauma from cutting complicaed and beautiful things from kindergarten

Better to create some simple works and be happy with them instead of trying too much at the same time and get disappointed. Once you've build up some good creative energy you can go try the more complicated things (in my opinion)
