Description
For today's post, something a little different.I decided to redesign a character that I drew relatively recently: Solomon Alexander aka Panzer, whom you can see protrayed in a piece called "The Mercenary" from 2011.
Panzer was an ex-convict, ex-white supremacist, ex-biker, ex-enforcer, ex-killer for hire and currently a mercenary and contractor.
Anyhow: I decided to draw Panzer again even if the original illustration was kind of relatively recent because I wanted to see if and how I had improved in my technique, especially due to the adoption of my now fully digital toolset and workflow.
The result revealed more improvement than I expected actually: better shading, proportions, and much more chance for detail - y'know, I really love details.
So I gave Panzer a facelift making him hopefully look more like a real person and less a cartoon character.

The art style is so different here. Many times your style is the same in both designs, but this is very different.

Yes, you have a point here. I tried to be as realistic as I could in this one; maybe because of the fact I wanted to push as hard as I could on the technical value of the illustration. To be true I still like the original, it's more "my usual style" and I think it captures the character maybe even better than the new one. So this redesign is in my opinion a fail: I improved my technical skills but didn't add anything to the character, or perhaps the opposite.

It's OK to make illustrations of someone's OC "iconic" or less-detailed. (your OC in this case) This is so many people can see the OC and imagine himself being in that role. Fewer details means the character will be less specific and more universal.
