Description
Don't get the wrong idea. I'm not saying people should stop using it altogether. However, I often see people relying a bit too much on it and its female counterpart. I've seen DA galleries that are nothing but "dolls" made with them. To boot, there are a lot of creative characters out there with features beyond the dollmakers' capabilities. I can name a number of my own characters as examples; I looked over the menus and saw no sign of inline skates, multiple heads, or Double Cutters. It may be a good brainstorming tool for beginners, but nobody can be a beginner all their lives.I may or may not make a female dollmaker stamp to go with this one. I'm not sure whether being redundant is better or worse than being sexist.

I pretty much agree with you. Gen8 even made a tutorial that said that her dollmaker was made to help people get an deafr their character, and that they should edit it to make it the way they want, instead of limiting themselves completly to what is in the game. I use her dollmaker to get clothing ideas for my characters, but I usually change the colors and add/subtract stuff. But having a gallery full of nothing but dolls, not good, not good, what happened to drawing? Have they ever heard of it?

Very true. I think that if people are gonna use dollmakers, at least don't post it, and use it for only inspiration.

Very true. The creator has even posted saying that the doll maker should only be used as a quick reference of a new character and not a final attempt. I myself haven't used it yet but after seeing this I'd like to see the options that DO come with the program.

True. Very, very true. And there are so many adoptables! It's sick. I think that if people "must" make a character in dollmaker, they they should AT LEAST draw it themselves instead of posting the actual dollmaker picture. That's what I do. And I rarely use dollmaker, I only LOOK at the clothes sometimes, for ideas.

It's very annoying, actually, to see so many adoptables. I don't buy them anymore.

I don't see anything wrong with adoptables as long as their creator puts a decent amount of effort into them.

Well I personally think that maybe they could show the dollmaker version and then their drawing.

I suck at making chars they always end up with colors togother which don't look right or to plain the dollmaker doesn't help me either thats why I ask people to give my chars a look I cange a few bits then start drawing using bases coz I can't draw for crap then again I have been on like 2 months

Even Gen has said NOT TO UPLOAD PICTURES FROM THE DOLLMAKER as art. She says to put them in scraps. She says flat out to use it as inspiration and draw the character in your own style. In her tutorial on saving the picture, she even encourages people to simply draw in parts of their design that weren't in the dollmaker.
I love dollmakers and character makers and whathaveyou, but sometimes I can't help but wish they didn't exist.

I agree that a persons whole gallery shouldn't be made of just dolls, but let's not forget that dolls do count as art. if they didn't, stamps wouldn't count as art either.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
sonicinterface In reply to MistressoftheRoses [2011-03-28 11:40:22 +0000 UTC]
Well-- there is an element of stamps that has to be created from scratch.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
MistressoftheRoses In reply to sonicinterface [2011-03-28 13:36:05 +0000 UTC]
yes, but you also have to take account the person who made the dollmaker to begin with. They spent a lot of time on that, and it's technically a good thing a lot of people use their dollmaker.
But yeah, you shouldn't just use dolls on your whole account.

Well,(and I'm not saying you aren't trying) Do you have a laptop and an iPod or iPhone with a camera? Or just a camera with a hookup to your tablet or laptop/computer?
My scanner hasn't been working, and that's what I've been using to upload stuff, not as good of quality as a scanner, but it's a pretty good method next to a scanner.
