Description This weekend I had the privilege of making it out to the Helix OR rodeo. Helix is a town of maybe a couple hundred people, but as you can see from this and the other shots I'll be putting up, they put on one hell of a rodeo.

My favorite events to watch at rodeos is Bulldogging. Bronc riding is a close second though.

The horse doesn't look happy at all. It's so cruel to put them in such discomfort for entertainment.

Really? The only thing they do is put a flank strap on and after the rider falls it's removed as quickly as the guy on horseback in the arena can pull it off. How many bucking horses do you think were slaughter bound at one time? At least they can give a slaughter bound horse a second chance where it will be fed and cared for.

wow...Would you please chill out!? the only thing they do is put the bucking strap on. Most of them are already "bucking broncos", There are some where there bucking straps come off and they keep bucking

snofoxx89 In reply to Emotionless-animal [2008-02-06 20:42:04 +0000 UTC]

I totally agree, they only put the flank on, if the horses didn't want to buck they wouldn't, and thats all. Good grief. *shakes head* People can't make assumptions when they have never been to a rodeo or behind the chutes. I have on several occasions helped put the rodeo stock in those chutes. My boyfriend rides bulls, used to ride broncs, the rodeo stock has a good life, they just have to go out for 8 seconds and buck, but for the rest of the time they are at home in the pasture.

Awasome pose, but to be honest, I never really liked rodeo. Though many people tell it's not brutal or anything like that, I have seen to many brutal things I can't close my eyes at.
Don't want to say it's like this in this case, it's a great photo... But I always have this bad feeling when I look at rodeo pictures..

Like any discipline you'll find two kinds of people, ones raising horses (and cattle in this case) because of love of the event and love of the animals, and ones who are in it for the money and really could care less about the animals. This is not exclusive to rodeo by any means but is all over the horse world. The atrocities done to walking horses for that "big lick" walk, illegal stimulants given to racehorses, trainers whose "training" means beating the animal senseless...these people are out there, but for every one person doing it wrong, there are 100 who are doing it right, the first kind of people I mentioned.I have it on good authority to tell you that the Flying Diamond stock company is that first kind.

I think part of the misconceptions of rodeo comes from people thinking that its still like some "wild west show" of old, where mustangs were pulled straight off the land and thrown in a chute, I dont doubt that they'd be scared. Todays animals are bred and taught to buck (yes taught), like a dressage horse is taught, or a jumper is taught. Its their job and they know that.

Think what you will I suppose, but those are my thoughts on the matter.

I know these facts, and I understand them and I think you're right. I have seen this kind of abuse in dressage and jumping, too, so I don't think it's only a rodeo problem. The thing that makes rodeo look like a brutal sport is probably because it's more visible. Jumpers are forced to jump with brutal training methods- you don't really see them beaten on competitions. But rodeo horses are sometimes(well, I mean, too often to let it be as "not important") seen brutally beaten, or forced to do things with electro shock(right word?). I see the point, that this is not more cruel than hitting a horse's foreleg with an iron bar(barring) to make it jump higher. Well, whatever. I see what you mean.

That is true, when idiots make their debut at rodeos it is a lot more visible. I wouldnt say these things are not important either, just very much illegal and not as common as their made out to be. All associations have rules against this sort of abuse, however, I believe they need to severely up the penalty and make examples out of people breaking the rules. They need to make it not worth the risk for people. Event though such abuse is pretty rare, if its happening enough to give PETA and SHARK something to point their fingers at (which is anything at all really), its still happening too often.

"Event though such abuse is pretty rare"
--> I don't think it's that rare, especially not in the world of dressage and jumping. Many people do everything for money, and a horse, that jumps pretty high brings way more money than onem that is only "average". I hate these people, and I hate the people, that know about this abouse, but buy such a horse nevertheless even more. How can you sit on horse, that has been beaten to jump so high or run so fast etc.. without having a bad feeling? How can you take it to competitions, make it jump and everything- although you know that it has been forced to do this? And how can you give it away, after 4 or 5 years, when it isn't that good anymore, not caring where it goes, buying a new one?
I can't understand people that treat their animals, which should be friends, as machines.

I was talking specifically about rodeo in that case, I haven't had enough experience in dressage or jumping circles to be able to make assumptions.

In in the horse industry in general its very sad how common abuse is. And the attitude you talked about of just throwing out a horse after its outlived its use, or just isnt what they want anymore is far too common. Some people have no problem sending a horse off to slaughter that they have ridden for years, just because it came up lame or some other excuse, no loyalty at all to the friendship the horse provided or respect for their life. It really is sad and makes me mad as all heck....but that is a different soapbox rant

finally i see a conversation that makes sense. i saw a video of a bronc tripping and he broke his neck and a whole group of ppl started yelling how rodeo is abusive and that that was an example. but the horse tripped. ive seen horses doing a perfect collected trot fall and break their legs or bust their faces or spook and fall. it just happens.
