He probably had the flank strap on earlier. They take the flank strap off as soon as the rider is thrown. The guy on the horse behind the one bucking is probably the guy who is in charge of it.

Going to the rodeo is my favorite passtime. And seeing the broncs... There is one that throws men every year; Her name is Sea Witch. She probably the most beautiful mare I've ever seen. A true athlete with long, powerful legs and fast as anything you can name. You should see her dive! Damned girl is like a falcon!

I'm sorry you felt the need to post rude comments instead of asking questions and/or educating yourself about the TRUTH of rodeo and the care of bucking stock.
If you would have asked I would have told you that broncs are amazing equine athletes and have life quite a bit better than many show horses (no soring, no living life confined to a small stall, no performance enhancing drugs or painful procedures, no being ridden at 1 and broken down by 4 etc etc etc,). They work a total of 8 minutes a year and the rest of the time they're allowed to just be HORSES. Broncs are beautiful, athletic, intelligent animals who, contrary to what PETA would have you believe, would never ALLOW themselves to be put in a painful or scary situation, thats equine nature, period.
I'm sure as hell not ashamed, in fact I'm proud. I'm proud to be able to capture the spirit, athleticism, and power of rodeo broncs and will continue to do so.
Unfortunately you didn't ask, you posted rude, trollish comments on my page, so I'm showing you the door.

That's nice to hear, I didn't know broncs only worked eight minutes a year... But please do tell me, I've been looking for an answer everywhere, what about the spurs? They look horribly painful when hammered into the horse's shoulders then raked across before being hammered into them again... Do they actually hurt the horse, or just annoy them? I personally think they hurt the animal.

ApplesCarrotsnGrain In reply to Red-Whisper [2009-02-18 08:31:18 +0000 UTC]
It depends on the spurs used and the way they're used. I've NEVER seen a horse bloodied by spurs at a rodeo. But I have seen a couple pictures of some horses that were abused by a big name trainer (one is Cleve Wells) that left bloody sores on the horses' rib cage (behind the girth area) that were the size of a man's fist and oozing pus. Just so you know, charges are being pressed and he's being investigated for neglect and abuse. This abuse was done while being paid to train a young horse and the owner did a surprise visit when he didn't return phone calls or emails. The horse also had a broken jaw and whip marks.
Dressage riders use spurs and if used properly spurs should only be an aid in riding or training the same way a crop, reins or a bit are used to give cues. Any equipement can be used for abuse, even a hackamore (bridle without a bit that uses leverage and if used wrong can break a horse's nose).

Oh yeah I know about that terrible man. It's ridiculous what some people do. And I actually use spurs and know they aren't abusive, when used correctly, I was merely concerned that the slamming of the metal into the shoulder would be painful...

Here's an interesting bit of info I found about spur use in rodeos while bronc riding from this site: [link]
"Putting the odds in favor of the horse is also why bronc riders are required to spur the horse. It is much harder for them to ride the horse when they do so. Try this: sit down in a straight-backed kitchen chair with your feet flat on the floor. Have someone shake the back of the chair. Now do it again, only this time hold your feet up and out in front of you in the same position a bronc rider would if he were trying to spur the horse on the shoulders. When the chair is shaken this time it is much easier to get "bucked off".
Bronc riding spurs are required to be blunt and free spinning so as not to injure the horse in any manner. (Bull riding spurs may be loosely locked for use on the looser hided bulls, but they must still be blunt.) Any bronc or bull rider who attempts to use non-regulation spurs is disqualified."

I'm guessing you've never ACTUALLY been to a rodeo. My mom's old horse used to be used as a bronc horse and a ranch horse. She loved it and we could even get her to buck a little just by applying a hand to her croup while riding (you DO know what the croup is don't you??) because that is the area that the bucking strap is placed. And this horse doesn't have the bucking strap on at the moment. It usually comes off when the cowboy does. And sometimes the riders will take it off before they get the horse out of the arena. And it's usually padded with fleece so it doesn't hurt the horse in the least.
Next time get your facts before you make a snarky and ignorant comment about something.

If done right they are a lot of fun. I've been to many and have never seen the kind of abuse that SHARK shows. Not saying that it never happens but that most people in rodeo have an investment in their animals and they don't want to cripple them or make them worthless. The worst I saw at a rodeo was to the cowboy. Some 16 yr. old kid rode a bull and tied his hand into the rope with what the call a suicide knot. The kid fell off and couldn't get his arm out of the rope and then the bull tripped and fell on him. IT definitely looked like he broke and arm and I wouldn't be surprised if he broke some ribs as well. But I haven't seen any animals get hurt so far.

oo! That outa' hurt
well thats a relief, see i don't know why people make SUCH a big deal out of it if it barely hurts the horses maybe they've seen so stuff idk lol

IΒ΄ve noticed one confusing thin when discussing with rodeo-people; no matter what thing you point out as hurtfull for the horse, they tell back "it wonΒ΄t hurt them" or "they dont feel it". IΒ΄ve asked this question --> from few and surprisingly NONE answered me back. My question was;IF horses dont feel almost anything (when we agree that if smth hurts the creature, it makes it act in discomfortable way) from what people do to them if they seem too calm and nonwild before letting out, WHY are those things done to them then? ItΒ΄s obvious theyΒ΄re made to make the horse more lively, and from what IΒ΄ve seen how horses react to them, they do feel them more discomfortably that letΒ΄s say plain petting or light touch with a whip. So why would they do such if horses dont feel them enough to react? wouldnt that make those methods useless?
oh and to this wasnt a huge shouting negative comment on rodeo, but a confusing question, so thereΒ΄s no need to hide this

Like what? A flank strap, as an example, encourages the horse to move his hindquarters as well as his shoulders (where the cowboy is), which makes for a more showy and a harder to ride round.
Also, there are things that are uncomfortable that aren't torture - wearing a pony tail for the first time makes your scalp tingle and itch, but it isn't cruel. That's a bad example, but I'm always bad at explaining things. xD

the shock, for example. Think about the question I mentioned before and after that imagine the scene in which the horse is shocked just before opening the door.

Not all horses are shocked. Most rodeo associations have banned it, but there are a few small rodeos where they still do it.

I think the people that get really bent out of shape on trivial things are the ones that have a few loose screws and too much time on their hands. If they want to help animals they should aim for things that are truelly cruel, like bull fighting or dog fighting and so many other things.

OMFG!! Some people really don't get it. I DO know about bucking straps (unlike people who get their info from Drama Llama groups like PETA and SHARK). The bucking strap is not put on so tight that it causes pain. If that were true then the horses and bulls would be raising holy hell while in the chute and they would have to hog tie or sedate the animals just to get the strap on. Have you ever tried to tack a horse that has had pain from certain tack? Like a bridle sour horse from bit abuse?? Or a horse that is cinchy?? They don't take it without a fight. Shockers are illegal to use in Rodeo. Yes, some will try to get away with it, but it's still illegal. And 5,000 volts is the same as an electric fence. It startles but even I have not suffered harm when touching an electric fence. The tazzers they use for police work are much more painful and dangerous. There are stun guns on the market that pack a whopping 1,000,000 volts and cost about $100. They will temperarily paralize a person.
I do know what all the horse equipment is for. I've been riding since I was 9 and am old enough to be your mother, so I'm willing to bet I know a hell of a lot more than you, little girl. And if your friend can spout off her opinion then so can I. Last time I checked I still live in the USA which is a free country.

"And 5,000 volts is the same as an electric fence. It startles but even I have not suffered harm when touching an electric fence."
So I take it as you have tried that device on yourself, correct? Now before getting mad, I do honestly believe that itΒ΄s not used in every single rodeo, because they know it shouldnt be used, and those rodeo-people really care for their animals, but then there are those places where SHARK has visited Ok people say theyΒ΄ve used that shocker on themselves, but how long? I mean, have they only fast touched their skin with it? cause everytime IΒ΄ve seen that device used on a rodeohorse or a bull, they keep it there MANY many seconds, till the point the animal starts moving to the point IΒ΄d be scared to be on their backs..!
Btw since youΒ΄re a rodeoperson, could u clear one NONoffencive question for me? ok; IΒ΄ve heard some rodeopeople saying, that at times they use that shockingdevice on the horse (before letting it out) so the horse wouldnt danger the one on itΒ΄s back? THAT really confused me, cause if Id be on a horseΒ΄s back and someone used 5000-6000 volts on it, theyΒ΄d be dangering ME and my damn LIFE!

I've never used a cattle prod on myself. I have tested a dog collar once. And I've accidentally walked into electric an electric fence a bunch of times (you'd think once would be enough to remember the wire was there across the gate). All the times I've been in contact with an electric charge I can say it startled me and I didn't like the sensation but it didn't paralyze me or do anything more than give me an unpleasant zap.
I do think SHARK and PETA have found places that have people that use cattle prods. But most of their videos post the same material form the same places over and over to try to make it seem that it's the majority of what happens at a rodeo rather than a small percentage by jerks. I'm not sure how long others have held a shocker to themselves. If they're holding it to themselves then I'm guessing they didn't keep it there for very long since your initial reaction is to jump away from it. But I know that all the rodeos I've been to I've NEVER seen a taser used and I've never seen the kind of accidents that SHARK and PETA post videos of (and the same videos over and over).
Again, I've never seen one used at a rodeo, but I have seen bulls that will lean their body into the panels that make up the chute WHILE the rider is one and trying to get into a better position and have seen the handlers on the outside trying to push animal away from the fencing to keep the rider from getting hurt or smashed. And sometimes when an animal is being that ornery and difficult they will pull the rider off and let him ride a different mount. The only time I would say that using a taser on an animal to keep it from being a danger to the rider is if the animal wouldn't move off the fence and release the rider's leg that's pinned. Otherwise I'd say that shocking an animal would only make them start bucking and rearing in the chute and that WILL put the rider into more danger.
