Description I can't believe I actually finished a tutorial! I always start them but quit part way through, so this is quite a feat. It's huge- about 100 pictures. It is the entire sculpture from wire armature all the way down to hair. Just click "download" on the left hand side. Enjoy.

For those who can't use PDFs, the tutorial is also online here: [link]

Let me know if anything is confusing or makes no sense. I've been on a lot of hydrocodone lately *bronchitis*

Amazing tutorial! I was actually trying to look for one. I wanted to maybe make a MLP (I know it's different structure but same concept) for a friend but needed to know how to get started. Can one basically follow the same steps if they're using galvanized wire and sculpey?

Yep, it's all the same stuff as discussed in the tutorial.

Ok thanks, I wasn't sure as my wire is very thin so I didn't know if it would hold well but that's what foil is for! I'll be sure to show you the finished product if you're interested~

SovaeArt In reply to hikarushirou [2011-12-23 23:21:15 +0000 UTC]

Well obviously it wont work with very thin wire. The function of the wire is structure and stability, it is pointless to use thin wire.

Yeah I have 3.5mm that I originally got (and the clay) for the purpose of making little charms and keychain things. But I used foil around the wire to bulk it up a bit, but I don't think it was working. She kept falling forward! My friend suggested it was due to lack of tail and that would balance it out but I was getting so frustrated. This is as far as I got. As noted in the last image, after taking it, I had removed some of the neck and added some "back" but she just wouldn't do.

Maybe the next try will work out better. I think I just need more (or stronger) wire, more clay and a bigger "canvas".

SovaeArt In reply to hikarushirou [2011-12-24 22:53:42 +0000 UTC]

If it can't stand up with that amount of bulk it's a pretty bad sign! It's often important to double twist the wire together and add more around the places where leg wire meets body wire. But at the end of the day most of the stability simply has to do with balance, just something you will need to tweak.

hikarushirou In reply to SovaeArt [2011-12-24 23:10:05 +0000 UTC]

Yeah it was ok for a little but then it kept falling forward. That's why in the last image I'm holding it up via the horn.

Thanks for the tips~ ♥

This tutorial is amazing! your first steps really helped me out as doing is armatures is where I seem to have the most troubles rather than the actual sculpting steps. It's great to see just how someone works and that you took the time to really get in depth with how you worked (and reworked) on each little detail.

I've seen people using turpentine to smooth out their sculpture. Do you have any experience with it? I've been afraid to try it out due to turpentine's uh, dangerous nature (don't want any ovens exploding/toxic vapors).

I think this is the best tutorial I've seen on dA! Very detailed, extremely helpful and it shows me which tool are paramount for working with clay. And I've always wondered what the hair that's added to sculptures was and now I know!

I can't thank you enough for this wonderfully helpful tutorial!

Very detailed and nicely done tutorial. Although I never use clay that requires baking, some of the tips are really useful (e.g. I always use multiple glued cotton layers instead of foil, and I guess this can work for me too). Thank you for posting this!

Once you have all your tools the only thing you have to buy over again is clay, and that varies in price. Tools do too, they can be as cheap or expensive as you want them to be!

I wasn't even looking for sculptures when I ran into this tutorial but I'm glad I did. Your tutorial is absolutely amazing and I read it all the way through even though I don't even plan on doing it! :3 It was wonderfully written and now I have all this knowledge on how to make a sculpture like this if I wanted to.

First off you make wonderful pieces of art!

Secondly, the detail you put into this is amazing. The quality of a tutorial like this is rare to come by!

Thank you so much for making it! Maybe I'll give it a try someday!

I've been considering doing this for awhile but I have a bit of a problem.
We don't have a convection oven and I'm not sure how much they cost. Would it be possible to use an a kitchen oven or would that cause chaos? I know its a really stupid question. I don't know anyone who owns one and I can't get access to the school's oven (its only allowed for students who have art classes...and they check).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SovaeArt In reply to ProjectWicca [2009-10-20 13:06:17 +0000 UTC]

You can use any oven, I've even used a gas oven. Get an oven thermometre and make sure you know what you have to do to get the physical temperature at 270f, and you should be fine. Convection ovens are just the best because they heat completely evenly.

It's a long, complex, messy, expensive, convoluted process I wouldn't recommend to anyone unless they were very serious about it. Go to smooth-on's website for lots of good information!
