Description I can't believe I actually finished a tutorial! I always start them but quit part way through, so this is quite a feat. It's huge- about 100 pictures. It is the entire sculpture from wire armature all the way down to hair. Just click "download" on the left hand side. Enjoy.

For those who can't use PDFs, the tutorial is also online here: [link]

Let me know if anything is confusing or makes no sense. I've been on a lot of hydrocodone lately *bronchitis*

liked the tutorial, was tempted to try it at home, cos my mum would love one of these, but don't have access to a kiln or convector oven, would i get the same effect if i used the craft modeling clay that can be baked in a standard kitchen oven?

any polymer clay can bake in any oven

yeah, but highest setting on oven at mine is 220 n on my bf's is gas mark 9, so would it be a case of putting it in for longer or using a modelling clay that has household instructions with it. just a little confused because the clay u used looks more like the stuff we had at college went in a kiln, which would have been 270 or above. (or raku? was in a bucket with newspaper n saw dust n always turned black.) your instructions did simplify the process enough for me to be able to have an attempt (of which would be no where near as gorgeous as your horses), just a case of finding appropriate alternative clay.

That's incredible. I've started a sculpture recently and I'm only on the wire but I think I've put way too much detail into the wire! Thanks for this! <3

I am just curious as to where you get your viscose hair from and what kind of die did you use to color the viscose?? I've looked in stores in my area and none carry the hair.. i found viscose on ebay but i just wanted to know if you got it from there or elsewhere?
I also wanted to say that i really am thankful that you took the time to make and put up this tutorial for everyone to view... it has really encouraged and spiked my imagination!! Thank you!!! ^____^

You won't find it in stores sold as hair, because it'd brought as spinning fibre. The people selling it on eBay are making an enormous profit, selling enough for one doll, and they succeed because people don't want to dye it themselves or don't know where to buy a large amount. I Got an enormous bag of it (like a foot thick) for under $15. I BELIEVE it was from coppermoose but you can fins mass amounts of viscose or ANY fibre that can be used for "hair" from spinning websites. [link] $12 for half a pound of viscose. The dyes are Procion MX. Dying it is a bit of a bitch, you need to mix the dye, apply it to the fibre and then let it dry, wash it, and then once it's dry it'll be all matted up and you need to comb it out and probably straighten it (I just use my hair straighteners) BUT it's a hell of a lot cheaper than buying tiny wads of a few grams for several dollars, and you have more freedom.

I'm glad you found the tutorial helpful!

Oh wow.. no wonder i couldn't find it anywhere!! wow... so it will be a little harder then i thought, but still way worth it. That gives me alot more to go by, i am glad that i decided to ask you. Thank you for letting me know!
If you dont mind another question, i was wondering if the dye is easier to take to a certain color of the fibre, like white or tan? I've never tried dyeing anything before but i imagine that black probably wouldn't take to a dye.

SovaeArt In reply to MysticSaige [2009-07-27 02:03:23 +0000 UTC]

It seems to take best to synthetics like viscose. You need another kind of dye for naturals like mohair, but it will go on just about any colour of viscose.

Lol I love your tutorial! I tried it today, but alas, the neck wound up waaaay thick... I also attempted it with masking tape instead of the floral and I totally get what you mean... I just cant find it anywhere, I'm worried about getting it online, cause I know when its old it can lose stickiness? Anyway I'm going to give it another try tomorrow

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SovaeArt In reply to fallendarkangel [2009-06-04 00:13:39 +0000 UTC]

Floral tape's not really sticky so much as it is tacky when light heat (from fingers) is applied. You'd have no problem buying it online, and it shouldn't cost more than a dollar a roll. I do have problems finding it in England (I noted that's where you're from) so I would definitely try the internet. Failing that you can also use a type of glue that's meant for sticking gems and small stones to things, it goes under different brands (like jewel-it) but it's a non-porous tacky glue. If you cover the whole armature with it, it will perform the same function as floral tape.

Oh perfect thank you so much Cool, well I'll try the internet first then. Here in England there doesn't seem to be many large craft stores- just teenytiny art shops. THank you for the tips

SovaeArt In reply to fallendarkangel [2009-06-05 14:48:35 +0000 UTC]

I'm english, just living in america, so I know the woes of being spoiled by a large selection either online or in craft stores that you just can't find in an english store. In the town I'm from there was like one tiny art shop that sold just super expensive oil paints, and that was all XD I had to take the train into brighton to go to a halfway decent store and even then they're tiny. Online is the way to go!

This was very helpful. I have been asking everyone about what they use before they paint it to get the paint to apply better because I have been having major problems with that. Everyone I have ran into has just said they put the paint straight on but that didn't sound too right to me and didn't work to well either.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SovaeArt In reply to glassie [2008-09-11 10:54:50 +0000 UTC]

right. You simply have to use mediums if you want the work to endure. People who paint directly onto clay and use no sealer have to expect the paint to chip and flake off.
