Description
I can't believe I actually finished a tutorial! I always start them but quit part way through, so this is quite a feat. It's huge- about 100 pictures. It is the entire sculpture from wire armature all the way down to hair. Just click "download" on the left hand side. Enjoy. For those who can't use PDFs, the tutorial is also online here: [link]
Let me know if anything is confusing or makes no sense. I've been on a lot of hydrocodone lately *bronchitis*

Amazing tutorial! There's so many easy-to-digest details that even people who are completely new to sculpting could learn how! Thanks

I've always wondered how you make these stunning things! I've tried with clay so many times and I just can't seem to get it right. I think I'll try again now. Certainly, you don't mind if I use this technique to you? It's quite wonderful!
So Polymer clay, is it always brown and if not do you recommend brown? I always have issues with the points of my figures burning in the oven. >< Then again, I've always tried to use Sculpey. I suppose Polymer works better in this way?
This tutorial rocks, it seems like you put a lot of time inot it.

Certainly I don't mind! That's why I put it up, hehe.
Sculpey is a polymer clay. Polymer clay comes in many different colours, and if you do not wish to paint it then using the coloured clays works fine. However Super Sculpey comes in a skin tone, and Sculpey Firm comes in grey. I use half of each, which gives me a warm gray tone I find easy to work with and see details on.
The points of sculpts burning is a major issue, and it usually happens because either the oven is not convection, or because the sculpt is too close to an oven wall where it tends to be hotter because of the reflected heat. To me burning doesn't matter- one of the sculptures in my gallery was once left in the oven so long that it burned totally black- but see if you can tell which one it is Once it's been painted, it makes no difference.

I burnt something black once XD I thought that would make the clay way too weak though. does it matter if your clay burns?

Actually, in my experience, it makes it harder. I'm not a material scientist though (that's my other half's job ) so I don't know about how brittle it is. So far as I can tell it's just discoloration.

Just be careful if it does burn, the fumes from it are really not great for you and can harm birds, since they're so sensitive to plastic fumes in particular. So just try to be careful when you use it and air everything out after just in case.
I've heard that cooking on a lower temp for longer periods of time can help cook pieces thoroughly without burning them but I haven't tried it yet.
I did burn a little wizard I made once, the oven knob got bumped to 'broil' and boy did he ever XD the whole top of his hat bubbled and turned black, his hands and face got blackened and charred too. He looked like the result of a spell gone very very badly.

Thank you for posting this, I've always wondered how you got your sculptures to be so real looking. I shall have to try some of this next time I do a sculpture.
