Description And here is my kinda simple tutorial for 2 part mold making. It is far more involved than a simple single mold. I tried to condense the steps as best as possible and not get too wordy.

Materials I use:

Van Aken Klean Klay Alternative (Soft) [any non-sulfur oil-based clay will work]
Smooth-On's Oomoo 25
Smooth-On's Smooth-Cast 320
Smooth-On's Mold Release 200
Pottery Tools
Foam Board
MDF
X-acto Knife
Hex Bolts

For bigger items, it is probably more cost effective to use a brush on silicone like Rebound 25 with Pasti-Paste for the mother mold (but more involved). Using just Oomoo 25 definitely is simpler though.

Do you think this would work with a katana blade that's about 38 inches long and 1/4 inch thick?

Just curious, where do you get your mold maker? my local Michaels only has the brush on type so i got no idea.

I order directly from the web from Smooth-On's TX distributor. You can find the list of distributor's here: [link]

Picking the closest state will simply save you on shipping costs.

I use Oomoo for simple molds or molds I do not plan to use very often. For molds with higher detail and that I want to reuse a lot, I use rebound 40, which is twice the cost of Oomoo.

Shipping cost AND shipping time. I used to order directly from Smooth-On, but then found the Chicago distributor, and cut my shipping time from 2-5 days down to 24 hours. If I order before noon Monday, I'll have a UPS box on my porch around 1pm Tuesday.

haha, ya. I was initially going to cut 4 blades from wood, but that is so much more effort.

So cool! I'd love to help someone do this one day. I would try myself but *hangs head* I'd probably just make a mess

Soynuts In reply to Moonfrostwolf [2013-02-21 23:35:29 +0000 UTC]

haha, the only time I've made a mess is when I've poured the resin but the molds were not clamped together tight enough. Resin all over, thankfully I always lay brown paper on the floor.
