Derrick (Rick) Matthews

A fearless eccentric with a taste for adventure, Rick is a hopeless do-gooder hell bent on finding the most dangerous situations on earth and jumping in to them head first.

Rick spends most of his time working as a caretaker at a storage facility and research lab, looking after the many Pokémon of other trainers on a colossal game reserve. The rest of his time however is spent trekking the world in search of the strange, the beautiful and the downright insane.

After years of caring for them, Rick has become a living Pokédex. He knows a truly insane amount of information about every single species of Pokémon and when I say insane amount, I mean ‘can glance at one of your Pokémon and tell you exactly where you caught it within a few hundred meters just by the size of its eyelids or whatever’ insane.

Despite his intelligence, a life spent surrounded by Pokémon has made him completely hopeless in any social situation. Rick has absolutely no filter and will say anything that pops into his head regardless of how offensive it is. It’s never meant to offend, he’s just......well, he’s just an idiot.

(Artist note: when writing for Rick, just try to imagine a happier Doctor who crossed with Jimmy Two Shoes and you’ll be pretty close to his character.)

Cyrus is the wise and patient master, faithfully watching over Rick and the rest of the team as they make their way through there many adventures.

Cy first meet Rick when he was just 9 years old. After saving the young boy from some poachers (who Rick had attacked with a stick not 5 minutes before) he became Rick’s best friend and lifelong partner in crime.

Cy is by far the most powerful member of the team with his psychic powers rivalling that of even the strongest psychic types but he very rarely shows this ability, instead preferring to hang back and only step in when he’s absolutely needed. It’s obvious that Cy is no ordinary Golduck, made clear by the fact that he can use Teleport however even Rick doesn’t know exactly where he came from or how he gained these abilities(then again, he never really asked).

Even with the air of mystery around his origins, Cy is still Rick’s most trusted friend and will be at his side, no matter what.

(Just so there’s no confusion. Cy is a support character and isn’t part of the competing team so he can’t be used in any of the battles.)

(Artist note: whenever you’re writing for Cy, just imagine that no matter what the situation, his reply would be “yes, I know what going on. It’s under control.”)

A knight in modern times, Sol is the gallant warrior of the team.

Of all the ways Rick found his ‘strays’, Sol’s discovery was by far the weirdest. Sol was found as part of a necklace, nothing more than a jewel with a few scraping of skin on it and hung up in a boardwalk stall. After “acquiring” (stealing) the necklace, Rick put the jewel in a nutrient bath and within 3 months Sol had fully recovered.

No one’s entirely sure how long Sol was stuck in that necklace although Rick thinks it was for a very long time, verging on a few centuries judging by how startled Sol gets by modern technology like cars or TVs.

Sol is on a constant search for evil doers to face in combat and will never turn away from a fight, no matter what the odds. If someone’s in danger, he...she......they? (you know what, we’ll just say ‘he’) will be the first one to jump in and defend the innocent.

(Artist note: I have absolutely no idea how to get this level of emotion out of a character without a face. I think looking at the intelligence cores from Portal 2 may help, but I’m not sure. If you work anything out please PLEASE let me know.)

Rodney is the team’s energetic, friendly and ever up-beat... wrecking ball of mass destruction!

Unlike most of his species Rodney is incredibly sociable, always wanting to meet new people and introduce himself (usually with an overly enthusiastic handshake). This is hampered somewhat by the fact that he has zero concept of personal space, frequently assaulting people with crushing hugs or involuntary piggy-back rides.

Rick first met Rodney when he was dropped off by the police after the little Aron had eaten the wheels off a freight train. At first Rick attempted to return him to the wild, dropping him off deep in the mountains. However when he turned up again 3 days later, Rick decided to keep him.

Despite his good nature, Rodney is far from friendly on the battlefield. However he knows never to cause serious harm to an opponent... unless of course they seriously piss him off.

(Artist Note: Rodney is the most animated and over-the-top cartoony character. Just try and have fun when ever your writing him and you’ll be on the right track.)

Penny
Species: Pidgeot

The stoic General of the team, Penny is the true ‘trainer’ and strength of the group.

Penny was Rick’s first Pokémon, discovering her just a week before meeting Cy. He found her as a tiny injury Pidgy, left in the forest and too weak to fly. After being nursed back to health, Penny along with Cy formed the core of Rick’s team.

Apart from Cy, she is the strongest member of Rick’s team and is utterly ruthless in battle. If you are Penny’s opponent, she will take you apart in the most brutally efficient way possible. Penny has honed her every move into pinpoint accurate and devastatingly powerful attacks, striking down even the strongest foes with a single flick of her wing.

Well aware of the many suicidaly dangerous situations Rick gets himself into, Penny is constantly training the rest of the team to help keep them at their peak. (That’s right, Rick’s team trains itself. Feel free to hate him as much as you want.)

And no, I have no idea how she plats her hair… feathers. Whatever.

(Artist’s notes: Penny doesn’t really acknowledge Rick existence. Not because she dislikes him but because she knows him so well. She pretty much already knows what he’s thinking.)

The care free spirit of the group, Quinn is a mischievous tease with a love for combat.

Quinn originally belonged to an inexperienced young trainer unable to cope with her behaviour, eventually leaving her at the research lab.

Outside of combat, Quinn is completely scatterbrained, frequently wandering off or climbing random objects (people fall into this category) making many think that she would be hopeless in a fight.

It’s a different story on the battlefield. Like flicking a switch, Quinn becomes a focused, expert fighter able to strike with expert precision and deadly force.

Gypsy
Species: Mightyena
Sex: Female

Gypsy is Rick’s loyal guard dog, vigilantly protecting him from the many things in the world that want to kill him.

When Rick found her, Gypsy was an abandoned little Poochyena left in the woods. After 2 weeks of bringing her food and getting painful bites to the hand, Gypsy eventually decided to follow Rick home and has rarely left his side ever since.

Gypsy’s very distrustful of stringers and will usually stick close to Rick until he gives someone the ok.

Although a skilled fighter alone, Gypsy’s true skill lies in multi battles. Her pack mentality makes Gypsy an expert at coordinating attacks and adapting around her teammates movements.

(Artist note: I know this isn’t strictly how a Mightyena is proportioned but I decided to base Gypsy on my greyhound because... well, because greyhounds are awesome. Oh and if you need a reference... find a dog.)

Clyde
Species: Machoke

The most recent addition to the group, Clyde is the newcomer trying to find his place in a team of oddball heroes.

Up until a few months ago Clyde was one of the many unfortunate Pokémon being used by the remnants of Team Rocket, forced to take part in awful attacks on the innocent and dangerous experiments on himself and others. He was only freed when the base he was held in was raided by the police with the help of Rick and Cy.

As a result of his time with the Rockets Clyde distrusts almost everyone he meets and prefers to keep his distance from people. Understandably, he also has a venomous hatred for everything Team Rocket and will take any opportunity he can to get revenge, a hatred that gets the better of his temper every time.

Clyde wants to do something good with his life to make up for his past actions with Team Rocket and believes that Rick and the team are the best way to do it. He’s still not entirely convinced Rick isn’t just a raving lunatic, but he’s willing to him a chance.

Oh, and when asked why Clyde wears human clothes, Rick simply replies “well... I imagine for the same reason you do.”

(Artist note: when ever writing Clyde just keep in mind that he’s not mean, he’s just angry. Try to make him seem kind of frustrated with life... so I guess you could just go talk to any teenager for reference.)
