Description My final police lineup for the time being. “Hoorah!” I hear my viewers shout in unison.

The following are outcasts from society, loners, shunned by everyone even though beyond their horrible exterior they are as human as everyone else. They are usually quite tragic characters and for that, here are my misunderstood monsters.

Erik, the Phantom of the Opera

As you might have guessed from the art in my gallery, I’m sort of a phan. Erik is very much the misunderstood monster, never having a normal life because of his abhorrent ugliness. A musical genius, it seems one of life’s cruel ironies that something so beautiful could come from something so repulsive. Despite his psychotic nature, you can’t help but pity him (or in the case of some fellow deviants, love him) and he’s a character whom I greatly sympathise with.

I decided to use the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical version of Erik because it was Michael Crawford as the Phantom who first sparked my interest in the Phantom of the Opera, others will disagree but I feel he was the very best Phantom. And he rocked as Frank Spencer he did all his own stunts you know!!!

I reused this head from another piece I did, partly because I was too lazy to do another head, but mostly because I really like the way this face and the mask turned out.

On a side note I just watched the trailer for the new film version and it worries me because I was planning on boycotting the whole thing, but I find myself slightly excited. I MUST control myself! I’ll reserve final judgement when I hear Monsieur Butler sing…

Joseph Merrick, the Elephant Man

The Elephant Man directed by David Lynch has to be one of the saddest films I’ve ever watched, there were times it made me quite emotional and incredibly angry at the way Merrick was treated. The much parodied “I am not an animal, I am a human being!” was so powerfully acted by John Hurt that I feel a pang of anger whenever I hear the line mocked.

My drawing isn’t entirely accurate, as I was going by memory from the film. For the most part it’s acceptable.

Frankenstein’s Monster

He’s probably the best known tragic monster…
To me, the monster was always the main protagonist, if anything Frankenstein was the antagonist of the piece. Because of the Boris Karloff portrayal people see him and know he’s a “monster” who goes around growling and causing havoc so they immediately assume he’s evil. Well, that’s one thing the film Van Helsing did right, recognising his lack of evil intent.

Again I took the lazy route and used the body of Herman Munster from a previous piece.

The Wolf Man

Cursed to become a wolf with every full moon, the wolf man struggles against the curse, but usually can’t overcome the animal desire to kill.

This Wolf Man was a last minute addition, I had originally drawn the Invisible Man, but felt the Wolf Man was much more a relevant misunderstood monster.

Count Von Krolock

He represents all the vampires who struggle against their urges to take lives. I think the song ‘The Insatiable Greed’ from Tanz Der Vampire is a good example of Von Krolock’s own struggle.

Is it really worth it when you have to die to live forever?

I still think Steve Barton was great as Von Krolock, he really brought the pain and strength to the role. You really believe in his power just listening to him sing. Michael Crawford was the Phantom, Steve Barton the Count.

GIR

I couldn’t resist adding this little guy. He’s not exactly a monster, but he is misunderstood.

The "Dark Ones" (even though they are an entire race) are a very misunderstood bunch from Dmitry Glukhovsky's Metro 2033

GIR is clearly way more misunderstood than some hunched over dude that hung around in a clock tower.

Ah, calm down dude, it's just a picture. You know there are plenty more 'misunderstood monsters' from popular culture I could have included on here. I simply included the ones I liked the most, and even then I had to leave off a couple due to lack of space. Frankly I thought the idea of including GIR was funny more than anything else. If my drawing has offended you, you have my sincerest apologies.

It's John Merrick, not Joseph. That's my only issue here, that and he wasn't a monster.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Spaceman-Chris In reply to Mycatjewel [2007-10-08 10:15:09 +0000 UTC]

actually his real name was Joseph, the film changed it for some reason.

I agree that he wasn't a monster, in fact I don't consider any of these characters to be monsters.

He was considered a monster by an unsympathetic and ignorant society.

Ooooooh, much love!

Steve Barton's got a gorgeous voice. I haven't heard any of Tanz Der Vampire yet, though, which is sad.

GIR is awesome. Hee. Very good choices. The only thing I liked about Van Helsing was the way portrayed Frankenstein's Monster. Which is slightly offtopic. But anyway.

Spaceman-Chris In reply to Christine-Daae [2004-07-03 01:21:57 +0000 UTC]

Yes, hoorah for Steve Barton! If you'd like to hear him sing from Tanz, [link] has some mp3s you can download, even though technically they're english demos...
[link]

Yes, Van Helsing did portray him in a sympathetic manner thankfully.

(Continuing your offtopic discussion)
One scene I did like from Van Helsing was the Masquerade Ball, you can probably guess what it reminded me of... I was keeping my eyes open for an Erik cameo

Oooh! Thank you! I will check that out as soon as I'm not at work.

Ooh, the Masquerade ball was lovely. It was even around the same time period, so it would have made perfect sense. Well, not that anything in that movie made any sense.

well being the anal person that I am, I wanted all of the Police Lineups to be the same size, so that meant I could only fit five or six characters at most... and Frankenstein's Monster sort of takes up a bit more room than I'd like...

I wanted the Wolf Man rather than the Invisible Man because Wolfy is more of a monster... don't worry I'm sure I'll be able to fit the Invisible Man into another lineup sometime in the future I have drawn him afterall, he's just waiting for his turn.

Yay great line up! I think this one is my favourite ^_^ lol for a change I know who they all are. Also I completely agree with your Michael Crawford/Steve Barton thing. *huggles Krolock* mine mine mine!

Oooh and have you ever seen Carry on Screaming? Your wolfman's costume is very similar to that of the...the...hmmm well I don't quite know what they were...the...monsters in that film! and they (I think) were misunderstood monsters too ^_^

Good job.

*runs away with Krolock*

Spaceman-Chris In reply to enchantedviolin [2004-06-30 04:24:58 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I thought you'd like Von Krolock, and I'm glad... I put the most effort into drawing him... I feel I need to do my best version of him to be true to the effort that went into the original costume and character design.

I haven't seen Carry On Screaming, I was going by memory of the costume worn by Lon Chaney Jr. in The Wolf Man which was basically a jumpsuit type thing... as for his face, I basically took quite a bit of liberty with him, but I feel he should have more hair on his face...

enchantedviolin In reply to Spaceman-Chris [2004-06-30 12:50:07 +0000 UTC]

Ah well Carry on Screaming was a British parody of 1960s Hammer Horror films. Maybe CoS got the idea for the costume from the same film as you.
